Gervonta Davis undecided who he’ll fight next

By Sam Volz: Gervonta Davis says he’s not sure who he’ll fight next after his win over an overmatched Ryan Garcia last Saturday night in Las Vegas.

Surprisingly, Tank (29-0, 27 KOs) refused to speak about a fight between him and undisputed lightweight champion Devin Haney when the media asked him at the post-fight press conference if he’d like to face him next.

Given that Gervonta seemed annoyed when asked about fighting Haney strongly suggests that he won’t be facing him next.

Boxing fans want to see Tank Davis fight these killers next:

  • Shakur Stevenson
  • Devin Haney
  • Regis Prograis
  • Subriel Matias
  • Frank Martin

Of the bunch, the former two-division world champion Shakur (20-0, 10 KOs) has the best chance of defeating Tank, so he’ll likely be avoided like the plague.

It’s predictable that by the time Gervonta’s management finally gives him the green light to face Stevenson, the New Jersey native will have aged and lost hand speed, and the fight won’t hold the same interest as it would if it happened while the two are in their prime.

Following the Maywether blueprint of letting fights marinate until a fighter’s skills have deteriorated, Tank will likely wait until Shakur is in his mid-30s before fighting him.

Gervonta (29-0, 27 KOs) knocked out Ryan (23-1, 19 KOs) in the seventh round of a fight that was disappointingly uncompetitive at the T-Mobile Arena.

For all his talk, the 24-year-old Instagram star Ryan quit on his knees after getting hit with a body shot from Gervonta in round seven. Sadly, Ryan didn’t even attempt to get up.

It would be a good idea for Tank to raise the bar to start fighting better opposition rather than social media-type fighters like Ryan Garcia & Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero. Those are guys with huge followings on Instagram but had done zero inside the ring before Gervonta agreed to fight them.

“Not right now. Just going back to the drawing board with my team and everything, and we’ll sit down and make a decision as a team,” said Gervonta Davis at the post-fight press conference when asked who he’ll fight next.

“I can’t really say. I just fought. I’m going to try and rest, and hopefully, we’ll come up with a good game plan in the next couple of months and head on again.

“He needs to focus on May the 20th,” said Gervonta when asked if he’d be interested in fighting for the undisputed lightweight championship against Devin Haney next. “I don’t want to speak on him. This is my moment.”

Tank should have spoken on the Haney fight because he had the spotlight on him, and it would have been the ideal time to talk up that clash for his next bout. Of course, if Tank doesn’t want that smoke with Haney, he did the right thing by telling the media that he doesn’t want to discuss that fight.

Ellerbe gloats about Tank Davis’ win

“I told everyone that he’s going to show each one of these fighters why he’s the best,” said Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe to the media about Tank Davis after his win over Ryan Garcia.

“I didn’t take the shot. That was a heck of a shot,” said Ellerbe when asked if he thought that Ryan could get up from the body shot knockdown in the seventh.

“They [Team Ryan] had a good game plan, and he tried. He didn’t sit back. He was very aggressive. Again, when you’re fighting in these big fights, experience. When you’re on this kind of stage, you don’t play to the crowd. You have to take your time, be calm, listen to your corner, and each round do what you got to do,” said Ellerbe.
