Floyd Mayweather to create his own world title belt

By Allan Fox: Floyd Mayweather Jr says he plans on creating his world title belt as a solution to the problem of there being too many belts in boxing.

Mayweather believes that creating his belt, which some think he’ll call the ‘Floyd belt,’ would be the only one “going to count” in the sport. The idea is that the boxers would ONLY want to fight for the ‘Floyd belt” and ignore the traditional IBF, WBA, WBC & WBO titles.

It sounds incredibly naive on Mayweather’s part for him to believe that fighters would only want to fight for the ‘Floyd belt.’

If anything, fighters would want nothing to do with a new title aside from those lacking the talent to capture the traditional alphabet titles.

Floyd Mayweather has said he wants to make his own world title belt to solve the problem of too many belts in boxing today:

“If we can’t clean boxing up, it’s time for me to come up with my own belt. Only one belt’s going to count, the belt I’m going to come out with,” Floyd Mayweather Jr said to @BetOnline_ag about his solution for the belt problem.

The real solution to the problem of too many belts would be for a mega-billionaire to create a league in boxing that has its own belt and offer HUGE money for the fighters to compete for that strap.

It would be a UFC-type of situation where the league would be separate from other organizations. The difference is that fighters would have the opportunity to make massive money competing in this theoretical league for their belt.

If fighters could make more money fighting in this league than they do for the IBF, WBA, WBC & WBO traditional titles, it’s clear that they would head in that direction.

That wouldn’t eliminate the significant number of traditional titles, but it would marginalize them to where they’re less important in the eyes of the fans. They would be ignored by fans and, more importantly, the network broadcasters.

“In today’s boxing, everybody is champion. You have ‘super,’ ‘regular,’ and ‘interim’ champs. If I didn’t earn the belt by beating the champion, I don’t want the belt. I don’t want these fighters to be proud, holding up belts they didn’t really win,” said Mayweather.

Mayweather’s former fighter Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis, has a “regular” belt with the WBA, which is viewed as a secondary title.
