Gervonta Davis vs. Ryan Garcia possibly done

By Dan Ambrose: Ryan Garcia and Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis could be fighting each other next. Both of them posted the word “done” on Twitter today, which suggests that the fight between them has successfully been negotiated.

Not surprisingly, Tank Davis (27-0, 25 KOs) deleted his post, so it’s unclear whether the fight is on or not.

Although Tank frequently deletes his posts soon after posting them, it could mean he’s changed his mind about taking the fight against the unbeaten Ryan (23-0, 19 KOs). The fact that Tank, 27, deleted his “done” post could translate that he’s had second thoughts about taking the fight.

Tank vs. Ryan is a fight that is still way too early to make because it hasn’t had enough time to marinate to be the huge mega-clash that it could be. The only reason it makes sense for Davis-Garcia to happen right now in December is that if they wait until next year or 2024, Ryan Garcia will likely get beat by someone.

Let’s face it; the 23-year-old Kingry still hasn’t faced any quality competition during his career to show hardcore boxing fans that he’s an elite-level fighter.

Heck, Ryan hasn’t even proven he’s a good contender because the best names on his resume were the washed Javier Fortuna and Luke Campbell, neither of which are in the same league as talents like Shakur Stevenson, Isaac Cruz, or Vasyl Lomachenko.

It’s difficult to get excited about this fight because Ryan is an unproven fighter still and is arguably a hybrid mix of a social media guy & boxer.

As I said, if Davis vs. Garcia doesn’t happen until next year or 2024, the chances of Ryan losing in the interim time are extremely high.

The only way Ryan doesn’t lose to somebody is if Golden Boy continues to match him very, very carefully, putting him in with old washed-up guys the way Matchroom Boxing boss Eddie Hearn had been doing with welterweight Conor Benn.

If Ryan proved himself by beating these guys, a fight between him and Tank Davis would be HUGE:

  • Jose Zepeda
  • Regis Prograis
  • Jose Ramirez
  • Josh Taylor
  • Subriel Matias
  • Teofimo Lopez
  • Gary Antuanne Russell

I don’t know that Ryan beats any of those fighters from the 140-lb division because most guys would handle him easily.

At 135, Ryan should fight these guys:

  • Vasyl Lomachenko
  • Shakur Stevenson
  • Jamaine Ortiz
  • Isaac Cruz
  • Michel Rivera
