Former undisputed heavyweight world champion and former two time heavyweight champion Iron Mike Tyson is the featured boxer in this edition of the Top 5 Notable Wins series.
To this day Iron Mike remains one of the most popular and famous boxers of all time. During his prime championship years, Tyson’s charisma and his incredible aura of invincibility were simply extraordinary. Even now, at 54 years old, fans are still enamored by the ferocious intrigue provided by Iron Mike. In fact, a few months back Mike Tyson released a short video clip of him training, and all of a sudden everyone is all fired-up about the triumphant return of Iron Mike Tyson! Indeed in just a couple of short weeks, Tyson is actually scheduled to have an 8 round exhibition bout against fellow boxing legend Roy Jones Jr. This more than 30 years after Tyson’s prime championship years.
On November 22, 1986 Tyson became the youngest boxer in history to win a major world heavyweight championship belt, when he won the WBC belt against Trevor Berbick. Tyson would go on to also win the WBA and IBF titles, which were the three major belts of his day. Additionally Tyson would secure a valid claim to the heavyweight lineage when he defeated Michael Spinks in June 1988 to become the lineal heavyweight world champion. Tyson was the undisputed king of boxing, widely referred to as “the baddest man on the planet”.
Tyson lost the title in a shocking upset at the hands of James Buster Douglas in February 1990, and a year later his career was ultimately derailed when he served a prison sentence. After an absence of more than four years, Tyson made his triumphant return. He became a two time heavyweight world champion in 1996, and he remained a legitimate top contender for years afterwards. But during his second career, Tyson was no longer the same wrecking machine he had once been during his prime championship years.
