Jake Paul Fires Back at De La Hoya: “Focus on Ryan Garcia, Not Me”

YouTuber Jake Paul retaliated at promoter Oscar De La Hoya in response to his remarks about his upcoming fight on July 20th against 58-year-old former unified heavyweight champion Mike Tyson on Netflix in Arlington, Texas.

Jake feels that De La Hoya should focus on his own fighter, Ryan Garcia, who appeared to be having mental issues, and is heading towards what many feel is a near-certain disaster against WBC light welterweight champion Devin Haney on April 20th.

De La Hoya has criticized 27-year-old Jake’s efforts to become a world champion at cruiserweight. Jake is clearly not serious about trying to capture a world title in boxing. It’s more about making coins against well-chosen older fighters.

Instead of focusing on fighting young contenders at cruiserweight, Jakei is selecting retired Mike Tyson, 38-year-old former UFC fighter Nate Diaz, 48-year-old Anderson Silva and 41-year-old Tyrone Woodley.

De La Hoya’s Conflicted Message

“Oscar De La Hoya has a lot to say about me and Mike Tyson. I hope he’s concerned with Ryan Garcia’s health and his legacy,” said Jake Paul on social media, reacting to some of the comments Golden Boy promoter Oscar De La Hoya has said about his fight against 58-year-old Mike Tyson.

“Jake Paul, you say you want to be world champion. You say you want to take this sport serious. Then take it serious,” said De La Hoya to the media. “This is not a popularity contest. I’m actually praising Jake Paul here to take this [his boxing career] because I feel if he fights the right fights and takes the right path to a world title, he can actually get there.

“I’m not sure if he can win it, but he can get there. But he’s not going to get there through Mike Tyson. He’s going to make a s*** load of money. He’s going to gain more popularity on Mike Tyson’s expense. Do I like it? No, because I love Mike Tyson.

Paul vs. Tyson: Entertainment or Travesty?

“This is entertainment. This is a fight that is going to do great business all over the world. More power to them, but the last time I heard, Jake Paul is serious about this sport. All I’m saying is make your money but take this sport serious,” said De La Hoya about Jake.
