Tyson vs Paul – Fight or Farce?

By Boxing News - 04/24/2024 - Comments

By Ryan Allan: On July 18th, a clash of generations takes place in Texas. In one corner, a YouTuber turned boxer desperately chasing legitimacy. In the other, a storied legend fueled by an unyielding spirit.

Jake Paul vs Iron Mike Tyson – live on Netflix – it’s the fight begging the question – has boxing finally jumped the shark?

That’s the debate swirling around this curious event– a contest built on hype, hubris, and an undeniable sense of morbid curiosity.

Billed as an exhibition bout, the announcement of the upcoming fight has sparked a largely negative reaction amongst boxing scribes and fans alike. A controversial event to be sure, never before has Netflix, the streaming giant with over 250 million subscribers, ventured into the realm of live boxing.

At first glance, Paul vs Tyson appears to be another slide into boxing’s dark side – the exploitation of a pugilistic legend for the financial gain of a YouTube punk and the suits at Netflix. But is there more to July´s contest than merely a money grab of epic proportions?

Jake Paul – Fighting Up

Let’s set the record from the start – I am, by no means a fan of Jake Paul, but there are some things to admire about the man. While his ambition is matched only by his ego, he has achieved much more in the world of boxing than anyone could have reasonably expected when he first announced his decision to turn pro back in 2020.

The Cleveland-born YouTuber turned boxer has shown a surprising level of dedication, in and out of the ring and It would be unfair to be entirely dismissive of a man who now sits as one of the richest fighters to ever lace them up. Really.

Undeniably a shrewd businessman, Paul built a following based on, shall we say, a boisterous brand of – air quotes – “entertainment” – aimed at those with IQs pushing at least double digits.

The Ohio native is no dummy, though, contrary to his appearance or, indeed, the assumed collective intelligence of his faithful followers.

Paul has made his mark, and his growing reputation in the sport is a testament to his not-so-unique brand of self-promotion. The 26-year-old has made some unimaginable strides in the boxing world as both a fighter and promoter.

His promotion of Amanda Serrano has helped showcase her exceptional talents to a far wider audience. This can only be saluted.

The Insta Era Defined

Yet, Behind the bravado, and big talk, Paul seems to represent much of a generation defined by its online persona – Vapid, deluded, often incoherent, and lacking in real substance. The Insta era personified in one, albeit fairly unique entity. his brother Logan aside.

Inside the ring, the Problem Child’s boxing credentials remain questionable at best.

Wins on Paul’s resume remain against long-retired MMA fighters or, fighting stiffs amounting to little more than store-bought tomato cans. A loss to Tommy Fury emphasises the point. Problem Child? Jake the fake seems like a more appropriate fighting moniker.

For a so-called boxer with no titles, or even a legit win against a top 100-ranked opponent to be talking fights with Canelo highlights the confidence/ or delusion of this golden goofball.

Of course, Logan fought Floyd, so just about anything now seems possible in a sport beginning to more closely resemble the WWE with every passing year.

Indeed, the trend of spectacle over competition speaks to a deeper issue that continues to cheapen the fight game – Money over meaning. Vanity over victory.

Boxing has always been a maverick. A clown. Yet today, the sport seems to be increasingly moving in a direction that prioritizes entertainment, viral moments, and financial exploitation over boxing talent. Paul´s ascent in the fight game is the living embodiment of an ice bucket challenge gone on far too long.

Is he an imposter, or a joker laughing all his way to the bank? I´ll let you decide.

So, here we are, this headline-grabbing clash promises to reach a global audience that could shatter boxing viewing records. Forget pay-per-view – this one goes live to all 250 million Netflix subscribers.

While Paul’s continued participation in the sport could be described as a shallow conquest in vanity pursuits, Tyson’s fabled storyline is far more compelling than any YouTube script the Ohio-born fantasist could have dreamt up.

Tyson Reborn

Tyson, a man defined by triumph and tragedy, continues to rewrite his own history but what is it that drives a legend like this, at 57, back into the ring?

The two-time heavyweight champions in recent years have been marked by a rather unexpected rebirth and surge in popularity. A successful cannabis entrepreneur, and very much a star on the podcast circuit, his ‘Hotboxin” series hosts fascinating conversations with guests from all walks of life. There’s authenticity, candor, and unyielding wisdom in his words.

The man we see today grapples with philosophy, questions the nature of existence, and shares surprisingly insightful and thought-provoking observations on this increasingly crazed existence we call life.

A willingness to embrace his vulnerability paints a picture of a man far more complex than the intimidating persona he embodied in his prime. The aged, and greyed Tyson seems far removed from the volatile figure of his youth.

The once baddest man on the planet has faced his demons, addictions, and past mistakes…and emerged with a wisdom and brevity that’s both humbling and inspiring. There’s an undeniable tidal force of fortitude in the man, an unwavering warrior spirit forged through countless trials, triumphs, and tribulations.

Perhaps, though, by stepping back into the ring, Tyson isn’t merely reliving his past glories but instead demonstrating a refusal to be defined by his past failures. A testament to the human capacity for change, growth, and finding renewed purpose even in the later chapters of a decorated rollercoaster life.

It would seem that this fight, for all its oddity, represents the physical manifestation of Tyson’s never-ending internal battle.

While seemingly at peace, the gods of war have been stirred once more. An opportunity to prove, not just to the world, but to himself, that the fire still burns. It’s a symbolic act of defiance, a refusal to fade quietly. The competitive spirit has been raised and who could deny him the chance to wipe the grin from the goofy blonde-haired dufus?

Hard not to Watch

Whether we admire the spectacle of the event or question its motives, there’s something undeniably compelling about Tyson’s refusal to bow to our expectations of what a man nearing his 60s is or is not capable of. His return to the ring embodies a raw, perhaps even primal, desire to test our limits to redefine ourselves regardless of age, circumstance, or critique.

The man whose knockouts seared themselves into boxing history, the original highlight reel maker, could Kid Dynamite reignite for one final night under the stars in Texas?

This whole thing, this scheduled manic drawing of hands, has that faint echo of a Rocky script – The aging champion, two careers past his prime, yet still yearning for one last dance. A flicker of defiance, a refusal to let age extinguish the fighting spirit that lurks forever in the hearts of our greatest champions.

Let’s be honest, despite the ridiculousness of the event, despite the questions surrounding Jake Paul’s true motivations, there’s more than a flicker of intrigue. There’s no denying it – I’ll be tuning in when the circus comes to town in Texas.
