By Jim Maltzman: Tyson Fury deserves a new one TRILLION dollar contract after his existing contract expires, according to promoter Frank Warren. Fury (30-0-1, 21 K.O.s) has won five of six fights since making his comeback in 2018.
He wants to fight another nine more years until he’s 40, and he has a lot of time to try and accumulate the kind of wealth that we see from Floyd Mayweather Jr., Anthony Joshua, and Canelo Alvarez.
‘The Gypsy King’ Fury wants a new contract that will vault him to the top of the highest-paid fighters in boxing above what Mayweather Jr. and Canelo have gotten.
Canelo was given a $365 million deal with DAZN. Mayweather is a billionaire, but he made a large portion of his massive fortune off of his pay-per-view bouts against Manny Pacquiao and Conor McGregor. Those fights came at the tail-end of Mayweather’s long pro career.
He recently stopped the previously unbeaten WBC heavyweight champion Deontay ‘Bronze Bomber’ Wilder (42-1-1, 41 K.O.s) in the seventh round in their rematch last February.
Who will give Fury a massive new contract that he supposedly deserves? Fury isn’t a pay-per-view fighter in the U.S, so it would be foolish for Top Rank to pay him to become the highest-paid fighter in boxing. If Fury could get an identical $365 million contract that Canelo received from DAZN, he would be doing well. Will that happen?. It’s doubtful.
Fury deserves one trillion dollar contract
“What Tyson Fury has done for not just boxing, but British sport, in general, is nothing short of out of this world,” Warren said via Fight News. “He could be awarded a trillion-dollar contract tomorrow and be worth every penny…the biggest character in boxing deserves the biggest contract. It’s as simple as that.”
Fury had talked about wanting to hang up his gloves at age 31, which is where is now, but he’s changed his mind. He now wants to continue fighting until he’s 40, and his goal is to get as much money as possible. There’s a couple of things working against Fury, and they are as follows:
- Pandemic wiping out boxing
- Weak economies in the U.K. and U.S
- Lack of big-name opponents
- Promoters and networks not likely to pour colossal money into fighters
- Fury isn’t a big pay-per-view attraction in the U.S.
The two fights Fury had with Wilder on pay-per-view in the U.S. failed to bring in huge numbers. What does that tell you?
As we saw with Canelo Alvarez getting a massive contract with DAZN, it’s not worth it for networks and promoters to give fighters huge deals that we see with Canelo, a guy that isn’t making the fights that bring in the subscribers to DAZN.
Some fans believe that the considerable contract that DAZN gave Canelo took away his ambition and his drive to take risks. The same applies to Gennadiy Golovkin, who also presented a significant deal by DAZN. Will Fury be the same way if he’s given a huge contract? We don’t know.
If Fury beats IBF/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion, Anthony Joshua, in 2021, he’ll have cleaned out his competition. Fury and Joshua will be fighting twice in 2021, but you’d that fight, the pickings are slim for Tyson.
Fury: I want to break records!
This year, Fury will be fighting Wilder in a trilogy, and that should be another easy win for him. If Fury defeats Joshua twice next year, there won’t be anyone left for him to make big money against.
“I want to get that big major fight deal. And I want to break all records for a British fighter to go overseas and get the biggest signing record in history. I know that with MTK Global, with Top Rank and Frank Warren and all the guys that helped in between,” said Fury to IFL TV.
It’s going to be tough for Fury to get anywhere close to $1 trillion for his next contract. If Fury loses to Wilder or Joshua in his upcoming two fights, then that’s the end. There won’t be a massive new contract for Fury. I suppose one of the promoters will sign Fury at a bargain rate deal, but it won’t be for the kind of money that he’s dreaming about right now.
We don’t know how good Fury is because he’s only beaten one quality fighter in his two-year comeback. Wilder says he wasn’t 100 percent, and he had something wrong with him for their rematch. What happens if Wilder is 100 percent in the trilogy match with Tyson?
Do we see Fury getting dropped repeatedly by Wilder as we saw in their first fight, or does he bum rush him an blast him out with the clubbing shots we saw in their rematch?
Fury will be fighting Wilder in November or December of this year, according to his promoter Bob Arum. He’s got to win that fight to move forward to the Joshua match in 2021.
