Deontay Wilder v Tyson Fury showdown could prove who the best heavyweight is on the planet

fury8912By Scott Gilfoid: Johnny Nelson of Sky Sports is really hoping that WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder and IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Tyson Fury can win their next fights so that they can face each other later on in 2016, because he feels it would be a huge fight. However, Wilder has a much better chance of winning his next fight against Artur Szpilka than Fury does in beating Wladimir Klitschko a second time.

Fury looked horrible in barely beating Wladimir by a 12 round unanimous decision last November. An impressive performance it was not by Fury. He squeaked by the 39-year-old Klitschko in that contest, and in some ways he looked even older than him.

“Deontay Wilder has been shouting he wants to fight Tyson Fury once he’s had that defence, but for him, he is king of the hill,” Nelson said to skysports.com. “He thinks Tyson Fury shouldn’t even belong in the same ring as him. In this defence he will want to put on a show, prove he is the real deal.”

Well, to be fair, you kind of can’t blame Wilder too much for him not believing that Fury belongs in the same ring with him. I mean, look at Wilder’s record and look at Fury’s record, and that tells you something. Further, look at the Olympic experience that Wilder had in 2008 in winning a bronze medal in the Olympics that year for the United States. The last time I checked, Fury did not have any experience in the Olympics. Wilder has so many things in his favor compared to Fury, so it only makes sense that Wilder doesn’t believe that Fury should share the same ring with him.

“I like [Wilder]. He’s erratic, he’s loud, he’s brash and he’s colorful, so him and Tyson Fury clashing, can you imagine the build-up for these two fighting?” Nelson said. “I hope he gets through this fight and Fury gets through his rematch with Klitschko because those two fighting would be so colorful.”

I totally agree with Nelson. I hope Fury and Wilder can win their next fights so that they can face each other later this year in their next fights, because this is a fight that cannot afford to be allowed to marinate. There is just too much risk that Fury will get the stuffing beaten out of him by one of the talented challengers he’ll be forced to face now that he’s a world champion and holding down three world titles.

It would be bad enough if Fury were holding just one world title, because he would still be forced to defend his title all the time against talented contenders. Now that he is holding three world tiles, it puts more pressure on him to have to face more talented fighters potentially than the guys that he’d been facing before he came a champion. Before Fury lucked out and beat Klitschko last November, he was facing weak opposition like Martin Rogan, Christian Hammer, Joey Abell, and Kevin Johnson. Now that Fury is a world champion, he will need to face Wladimir in his first title defense as champion.
