Klitschko willing to fight Fury in UK if it makes business sense

wladimir400By Scott Gilfoid: New heavyweight champion Tyson Fury’s trainer Peter Fury has been talking about wanting the rematch with Wladimir Klitschko (64-4, 53 KOs) to take place in the UK in 2016. It sounds good in theory, but it has to be something that Klitschko and his management are agreeable to.

Klitschko’s manager Bernd Boente is potentially open to the idea of the Klitschko-Fury rematch taking place in the UK if it makes sense as far as the money the fight can generate. However, if it doesn’t make sense business wise, then there’s going to likely be some resistance from Klitschko and Boente.

They’re not just going to fall in lock step to some crazy idea that is floated by Peter Fury and Tyson for where they want the fight to take place.

“Yes, we said that last time, there is no doubt. If the best business case is in the UK, for example Wembley Stadium in London, we will be there,” Boente said to skysports.com.

I don’t see why the fight can’t take place in Germany again as long as the fight can generate more money than in the UK. But if Fury and Peter can guarantee that a rematch with Klitschko would sellout Wembley Stadium in London, then that might be a good idea to have the fight take place there. However, it would also depend on the price of the tickets. I mean, if the tickets are being sold for next to nothing to sellout Wembley Stadium, then it might be better off to stage the fight in Germany, because the tickets over there are going to go at a premium price due to Wladimir’s huge popularity.

Where the fight takes place should come down to where the most money can be made rather than a situation where one of the fighters wants to give their fans a gift of try and gain an edge by having the fight staged where they want to so that they can have a fan friendly crowd cheering them. Wladimir proved last Saturday that the fans can’t help you when you’re inside the ring. Heck, Wladimir was being cheered all night by the fans, and yet he still fought horribly.

“I spoke to Mick Hennessy who was my partner in the last negotiation, and is the partner now,” Boente said. “We will look into the different options of where the fight could be – in Germany or in the UK. We will, together, make a decision. I’m sure we will do the best for both teams. We need, definitely, a couple of weeks. My gut feeling tells me the fight will probably be in May or June.”

Hopefully the two fighters’ management can come to an agreement over where to stage the rematch because it would be sad for them to get stuck on the venue and then not have the fight take place.

At latest, we’re probably looking at June for the Klitschko vs. Fury rematch to take place. Anything later than that wouldn’t be fair for the contenders that are waiting for their own crack at the IBF/WBA/WBO/WBO heavyweight titles. There’s also people like Deontay Wilder who is waiting for his shot at the winner of the Klitschko-Fury fight. Deontay doesn’t want to have to wait forever before he gets a crack at Klitschko or Fury. Wilder has had to wait long enough as it is, and missed out on his chance to dethrone KLitschko of his titles after he decided to face Fury.
