Gennady Golovkin vs David Lemieux(Photo credit: William Hart, K2 Promotions/Golden Boy Promotions) By Dan Ambrose: IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux (34-2, 31 KOs) says he plans on being a lion when he gets inside the ring this Saturday night in his unification fight against IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) on HBO PPV at Madison Square Garden in New York.

If there was anyone wondering whether the 26-year-old Lemieux would show some battle tactics and some finesse in there with Golovkin in this important clash, Lemieux answered those questions today in his media conference when he said that he’s going to be fighting aggressively.

It looks like Lemieux is planning on using the tools that got him to this point by him focusing on his power game in hopes that he can overwhelm the 33-year-old Golovkin in this fight. Lemieux must feel that he can’t win if he tries to box and pick his spots to land his big power shots.

“I am going to be a lion in there. Nothing is going to be in my way,” Lemieux said. “It is kind of like David and Goliath. Everyone is impressed on this big GGG, he is impressive and talented but there is also David who is making a lot of noise. I know what I am going up against and I am going in with a nice package to deliver to Golovkin.”

If Lemieux is a lion on Saturday night, then he’s going to need some kind of a backup plan to use if things don’t work out in his favor in the ring. It wouldn’t look good if he starts getting dropped left and right in the first two rounds of the contest.

If Lemieux is just going to keep trying to fight a lion, then he’s going to going to end up going out on his shield. At the world level, a fighter has got to be able to use some strategy to try and win fights. You can’t overpower everyone you face.

Up to this point, Lemieux has been pretty lucky due to the soft match-making that his promoters have done for him since his loss to Joachim Alcine in 2011. The only quality fighter that Lemieux has faced since then was Hassan N’Dam, who is noted for having a weak chin. Peter Quillin knocked N’Dam down six times in their fight in 2012. Lemieux merely took advantage of N’Dam’s weak chin by knocking him down 4 times in their fight last June.

“I am aware of his record but I am also aware of who I am and what I can bring to the table. My concern is the present and making sure I win on Oct. 17,” Lemieux said.

Lemieux talks a positive game, but he’s going to need a lot of luck on Saturday night if he wants to win this fight because I don’t know if he’s capable of beating Golovkin at his own game. Golovkin likes to slug and he’s very, very good at it.

Golovkin doesn’t get hurt or worn down in his fights like Lemieux does. For that reason it might be better for Lemieux to pick his spots in which to let his hands go because if he just stands in there and looks to throw everything he has but the kitchen sink early in the fight, then he’s going ti wind up getting knocked out.
