Fury beats Klitschko, says Mitchell

fury5667By Scott Gilfoid: Kevin Mitchell (39-3, 29 KOs) is giving his vote of support to fellow countryman Tyson Fury (24-0, 18 KOs) to unseat IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (64-3, 53 KOs) in their fight in a little over a month on October 24th at the ESPRIT Arena in Dusseldorf, Germany.

Mitchell thinks Fury is capable of scoring a knockout over the 6’7” Klitschko. He thinks that the combination of Fury’s size, strength and anger will be too much for the aging 39-year-old Klitschko.

“I think Fury beats him. I think it’ll be a late knockout or points for Fury. He’s too big and too strong and too angry,” Mitchell said to skysports.com.

I wasn’t aware that Fury was harboring anger for Klitschko. I did not know this. I thought they got along fairly well during their press conferences. But even if Fury is angry at Klitschko, how long can he stay angry? I don’t think that’s an emotion that is worth anything for a 12 round bout. I mean, it might be useful for Fury for about one round, but after that, he’ll have an adrenalin crash and will be back to his normal simple easy going self. But let’s pretend for a second that Fury could stay angry for 36 minutes, I don’t think that would help him at all.

I think actually hurt him because he’s little more than a tall slapper without the punching power that he needs to go after Klitschko in a rage. If Fury gets worked up to a wild animal rage and charges Klitschko in the 1st round, he’s likely going to run into something and wind up getting blasted out quickly.

Anger is no good against a guy like Wladimir. You have to be smart and set traps to beat him. That’s how Corrie Sanders and Lamont Brewster both beat him. Ross Puritty beat Wladimir by attacking him all night long with heavy pressure.

“I was with Tyson the other week in Leeds and had a good chat to him for quite a while,” Mitchell said. “I told him that if I didn’t fancy him winning, I’d tell him straight. I think he’s too fresh, young and hungry.”

Fury, 27, is definitely a lot younger than the 39-year-old Klitschko. Whether that can help Fury is another thing. It’s only to be younger if you’ve got excellent punching power, good hand speed and superior stamina. As far as I can tell, Fury doesn’t have any of those things going for him in this fight.

Wladimir has the faster hand speed by faster, and the far better punching power. As far as stamina goes, Fury might have an edge in that department. But what good will it be for Fury to have better stamina if he can’t handle Wladimir’s big power shots and his faster hand speed? I mean, how can Fury display his superior stamina if he’s face down on the canvas snoozing after a round or two.

I don’t think it’s going to go too well for Fury on October 24th unless he finds some punching power before then. Fury reminds me of a slightly taller version of Francesco Pianeta. He’s got about the same amount of punching power, and the same upright fighting style. It’s a totally ineffective style to try and beat a talent like Klitschko.
