Michael Montero – Tomorrow night two undefeated pound for pound stars look to impress, as middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin goes up against Willie Monroe Jr and flyweight champion Roman Gonzalez faces Edgar Sosa. It’s a truly international affair, as the HBO Championship Boxing broadcast will feature fighters from Kazakhstan, Nicaragua, Mexico and the USA. This afternoon the fighters hit the scales inside the storied Forum of Inglewood, California.

Mexico City native Edgar Sosa (51-8, 30KO) has fought a who’s who of the lower weight classes over his fifteen year career. Today he weighed in first and although he came in two ounces over the flyweight limit of 112 pounds, he was given extra time to burn it off and did so. The undefeated Roman Gonzalez (42-0, 36KO) went next next and came in at 111 pounds, feeling confident enough to hold a flag of his native Nicaragua while on the scale. This bout features the classic ‘young versus old’ boxing matchup, with the 27 year old Gonzalez facing the 35 year old Sosa. Both men have fought all over the world, but this will be the first time in Los Angeles for Sosa and the second for “Chocolatito” (2012).

Next up was Rochester, New York native Willie Monroe Jr (19-1, 6KO), who looked ripped as he weighed in exactly at the middleweight limit of 160 pounds. Kazakhstan native Gennady Golovkin (32-0, 29KO), a unified titlist and the hottest fighter in the sport, came in at 159 pounds. For Monroe, this bout represents a quantum leap in opposition, and this will be his first match in Los Angeles. The southpaw enters the ring tomorrow riding the momentum of having won the ESPN “Boxcino” tournament last year, as well as a victory over the rugged Brian Vera in January. For Golovkin this will be the second fight in his adopted hometown. Last October the knockout artist destroyed Marco Antonio Rubio over two rounds at the StubHub Center in Carson. The overwhelming commercial success of that event, which set a record crowd for the venue, promoted K2 Promotions to bring “GGG” back to LA as soon as possible.
