Mayweather: I want to put Khan on his backside

floyd10By Chris Williams: WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr (47-0, 26 KOs) is well aware that his father/trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr wants to see him give #1 WBC, #3 WBA, #6 WBO Amir Khan (29-3, 19 KOs) a beating next May when Mayweather fights again.

If Mayweather does choose Khan as his next opponent, he feels that he’s going to give Khan a beating and leave him on the canvas. Mayweather views himself as being too smart for Khan, and he sees him as a guy that won’t be able to stay in there with him once the going gets tough.

Mayweather says if he does decide to fight Khan it’ll be because he thinks that he’s earned the shot against him, not because he’s talked his way into the fight the way some fighters try to do with Mayweather. Right now you can’t really say that Khan deserves a fight against Mayweather because he’s not fought a high level fighter since his loss to Danny Garcia in 2012.

Khan has fought three times since the defeat to Garcia and he’s beaten Carlos Molina, Julio Diaz and Luis Collazo. What Khan needs is a high level opponent for his fight in December if Khan chooses to fight then.

Khan has talked about wanting to fight in December, but with Mayweather now mentioning his name as a potential future opponent, it’s quite possible Khan could choose to stay out of the ring for December like he did last year in December and just wait for May to roll around to see if he gets the lottery fight against Mayweather.

“My Dad is desperate for me to take – the Khan fight – he just wants me to shut the kid up and put him down,” Mayweather said to the Dailymail.co.uk. “My Dad doesn’t like fighters trash talking his son – but he knows as well as I do that if the fight happens – then I am going to punish him [Khan]. If he thinks he can trash talk me and get away with it he needs to think again.”

To be sure, Floyd Sr has been talking nonstop about wanting to see Mayweather Jr fight Khan. He’s talked about that fight for over a year now, but it’s now it’s gotten to the point where that’s all Floyd Sr seems to talk about now. He wants to see his son shut Khan up for all the trash talking that he’s done.

“I am a far more intelligent fighter than him – and I could already tell you how I would beat him,” Mayweather said about Khan. My Dad wants the fight, I want to put him on his backside, so hopefully we can make it happen.”

Khan needs to show a little bravery for his December fight by taking on someone good. Khan’s adviser Al Haymon has a lot to do with the match-making for him, but Khan still has veto power. He could have said no to Carlos Molina, Julio Diaz and Luis Collazo in the past, but he agreed to the fights.

If Haymon offers another lower level fight for Khan then it’s going to be up to Khan to insist that he be matched up against a good fighter like Robert Guerrero or Devon Alexander next. Josesito Lopez is the guy that is being talked about as Khan’s next fight, and he’s not a great option considering that he’s lost three out of his last seven fights.

Lopez would have been a good fight for Khan immediately after his loss to Danny Garcia in his first fight back from that defeat, but he’s a poor option four fights later.
