katsidis6By Scott Gilfoid: 34-year-old Michael Katsidis (30-7, 24 KOs) ran into a left hook that he didn’t see from lightweight Tommy Coyle (20-2, 9 KOs) and was knocked out in the 2nd round on Saturday night at the Hull Arena in Hull, England.

To his credit, Katsidis did get back to his feet and was ready to continue fighting, but the referee halted the fight anyway. We’ll never know for sure whether Katsidis could have kept fighting or not, because the referee took the opportunity away from him by stopping the fight.

You’d like to have thought that Katsidis could have kept fighting for old time’s sake, but there’s no way of knowing. As such, the ending was sort of controversial for me.

Katsidis fought well in the 1st round in landing some nice head and body shots. He was putting pressure on Coyle, and it looked like a fight that might have gone Katsidis’ way if not for him getting hit with a punch he didn’t see.

In the 1st round, Katsidis hit Coyle with a left to the head that sent him down on the canvas. However, the referee ruled it a slip inside of a knockdown for some reason. It looked like a legit knockdown to me.

Coyle looked like a welterweight tonight instead of a lightweight. I mean, he was much, much bigger than Katsidis tonight. I wonder how much Coyle rehydrated to because he looked at least to be 147 in the ring tonight.

Coyle’s win now will likely set him up for a fight against Luke Campbell. That should be an interesting domestic level scrap.

Undefeated super bantamweight Gavin McDonnell (12-0-2, 4 KOs) defeated former world champion Vusi Malinga (21-6-1, 12 KOs) by a close 12 round unanimous decision to capture the World Boxing Organization International super bantamweight strap.

Malinga landed a lot of nice shots, but McDonnell was the busier of the two and had the judges score the fight in his favor. The judges scored the fight 116-111, 115-112, 116-111.

Unbeaten lightweight prospect Luke Campbell (9-0, 7 KOs) defeated Argentinian Daniel Brizuela (26-4-2, 8 KOs) by a 5th round knockout. Campbell knocked Brizuela down in the 5th. He then unloaded on him with a flurry after he got up, causing the fight to be halted.

Brizuela is the same fighter that Tommy Coyle went life and death with recently before Brizuela was knocked out in the 12th round.
