Martin Murray: I want the Golovkin fight

murray2By Scott Gilfoid: #1 WBC Martin Murray (28-1-1, 12 KOs) will be fighting #7 WBC Domenico Spada (39-5, 19 KOs) tonight to try and get a title shot against WBA middleweight title holder Gennady Golokvin in 2015.

Murray, 32, says he wants that fight against the Kazakhstan fighter. Murray is kind of in a situation where he’s going to need to take the fight against Golovkin, because if he chooses not to fight him for the title, Murray could then wind up sitting and waiting for ages before any of the other champions will fight him. I mean, Murray sure as heck isn’t going to get a title shot against WBC champion Miguel Cotto in this lifetime, even though Murray is ranked #1 by the WBC.

That fight isn’t happening, because Cotto isn’t going to burn up a valuable fight facing a guy that casual boxing fans in the U.S have never heard of.

The Murray-Spada fight will be taking place at the Salle des etoiles, Monte Carlo, Monaco. U.S fans will be able to see the fight via ESPN 3 if they’re interested. If nothing else, it’ll give American fans a chance to get a glimpse of the next guy that faces Golovkin in February of next year in Europe. HBO will be televising Golovkin’s next fight.

“People talk about Golovkin and you’ve got to answer questions about it, but the more people I get asking me about it, the more I get motivated to do a proper job on Spada,” Murray said via ESPN.com. “For that reason, I’m completely focused on Spada and am not thinking about Golovkin one bit. In fact, I didn’t even watch his fight against Marco Antonio Rubio at the weekend. I just completely ignored it. Instead, I stuck in a DVD of Spada that morning to keep me focused.”

That’s interesting that Murray didn’t bother to watch the Golovkin fight. I guess I can understand that, because it might be a little depressing to watch Golovkin’s last fight against Marco Antonio Rubio, because Golokvin made easy work on a guy that knocked Spada out in 10 rounds earlier this year. If Murray doesn’t smash Spada the way Rubio did or better, then Murray is going to look like the next sacrificial lamb for Golovkin rather than his next opponent.

“I want the Golovkin fight and it’s one I’ve always wanted,” Murray said. “It’s one I look forward to.”
