By Chris Williams: WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr (46-0, 26 KOs) sees Marcos Maidana (35-4, 31 KOs) as having nothing that he can do to adapt and rebuild his game for their next fight on September 13th.
Mayweather sees Maidana as a limited slugger who has only one plan and that’s to slug when he gets in the ring with him at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, and Mayweather is going to neutralize his slugging immediately with what he brings to the fight.
By the time that Mayweather and Maidana get into the in September, Mayweather will have had three months to prepare for Maidana’s style, and it’s going to be easy for him to take away his game right from the start unless Maidana can show another side to his game that he didn’t reveal the last time they fought in May.
“I think that every time that Maidana has gone out and fought opponents, other opponents and even myself, he’s done the same thing,” Mayweather said.
Maidana is kind of a one trick pony. He goes out and slugs and tries to overpower his opponents. He has a style that is going to go nowhere if Mayweather comes out boxing and doesn’t give him a handicap like he did last time they fought.
The main thing that Maidana’s trainer Robert Garcia has taught him is to use his jab, but that’s not going to be enough for him to handle Mayweather’s boxing skills when he’s in the center of the ring on September 13th. Maidana might be able to land an occasional jab, but Mayweather is going to be hitting him with clean rights and left hooks, and that’s going to be enough for Mayweather to win the rounds with ease.
“Out of the 45 that I’ve faced, I was able to do different things. I can box. I can counter punch. I can box on the move. I can counter punch on the move. The only way that he can fight is to slug,” Mayweather said.
Maidana is going to be out of his element in the rematch if Mayweather chooses to box him the entire time. Without Mayweather trying to make it interesting by punching with him, Maidana is going to be in for 12 rounds of clowning in this fight and there’s not much he can do about it other than hope that Mayweather will punch with him like last time.
