By Chris Williams: WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr (46-0, 26 KOs) was seen with Alex Ariza, the former strength and conditioning coach for Marcos Maidana (35-4, 31 Kos), last Friday early in the morning at Mayweather’s Boxing Gym in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Ariza helped Mayweather stretch before one of his runs. What’s not know as of now is whether Ariza is going to be joining Mayweather in his final two weeks of training for his September 13th rematch against Maidana at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Ariza was recently let go by Maidana’s coach Robert Garcia before he started his training camp for the Mayweather rematch. Ariza helped Maidana get in excellent shape for his previous fight against Mayweather last May, but then he was unceremoniously let go.

Mayweather could be helped by adding Ariza to his camp for the final push to the fight, as he’s got to know quite about Maidana’s weaknesses that he can tell Mayweather about. Even if Ariza isn’t used by Mayweather for the fight, the knowledge that Ariza has on Maidana has got to be seen as priceless.

For that reason alone, it might be in Mayweather’s best interest to have Ariza on his payroll for this fight as an adviser. Ariza would be like a third coach for Mayweather, and it could only be seen as a positive to help raise Mayweather’s game to another level. Ariza also would be a great addition for Mayweather to fine tune his training in his final 2 weeks.

There’s obviously not much time for Ariza to make any real changes to Mayweather’s conditioning, but he can definitely make some improvement in his game before the big fight. But the area here Ariza is most useful is his knowledge about Maidana. Ariza has got to have seen Maidana spar countless times, and he would likely have a lot of incite to the kinds of things that his trainer Robert Garcia would be telling him to get him ready for the Mayweather clash.

Mayweather is talented enough to beat Maidana without Ariza’s help, but it certainly doesn’t hurt to have his expert opinion in training camp to inform Mayweather about the kinds of tactics that he sees Maidana using for the fight.
