(Photo credit: Tiffany Lam) By Allan Fox: Heavyweights Bermane Stiverne (23-1-1, 20 KO’s) and Chris Arreola (36-3, 31 KO’s) weighed in on Friday for their clash tomorrow night at the Galen Center in Los Angeles, California. Both fighters looked a little flabby which is normal for both guys given their physiques. Arreola weighed in at 239 pounds.
That’s the lowest weight that Arreola has weighed in at since he weighed in at 236 for his 10 round decision win over Friday Ahunanya in July 0f 2011. Arreola looks like he’s worked really hard during training camp, and will possibly do a better job this time than he did in their previous fight in April of last year, a fight which Arreola lost by a 12 round decision.
Stiverne weighed in slightly heavier at 239.5lbs. This is 8 1/2 pounds lighter than the 248 that Stiverne weighed last year when he beat Arreola by a 12 round unanimous decision in Ontario, California, USA. Stiverne hasn’t fought since then, as he wasted a lot of time waiting on a title shot against former WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko in a fight that never took place due to Vitali’s injuries and reluctance to get in the ring. The time out of the ring could ultimately hurt Stiverne in this fight unless he’s had a long training camp to get the rust out. In his previous fight against Arreola, Stiverne came into the fight having fought only once in 2012. Stiverne looked fresh in that fight, and a lot stronger than Arreola.
Vitali’s retirement is a real blessing for both Arreola and Stiverne, because if Vitali had continued to fight, they likely would have stood no chance of beating him. Arreola was already stopped by Vitali in the 9th round in their fight in 2009. Arreola doesn’t look like he’s improved since then. He just looks like he’s aged a little. Stiverne has power, but he’s a short heavyweight who tends to box and isn’t particularly fast or explosive.
