Mayweather vs. Maidana: Prediction and analysis

may60(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Juni Rosa: WBA welterweight champion Marcos Maidana (35-3, 31 KO’s) has shown that he has a big heart, but I do not find him to be a skillful fighter. On many occasions when rushing in to throw punches, Maidana is off balance. He is a wild fighter, and so far it has been working out for him making him one of the most exciting fighters to watch since Arturo Gatti.

Maidana has also been surprising people, especially when it seemed that people have already counted him out before the Adrien Broner fight. He kind of reminds me of Ricardo Mayorga but a better fighter than him.

As much as I would love to see Maidana take the victory away from Floyd Mayweather (45-0, 26 KO’s), I do not believe he has enough in his arsenal to beat Mayweather. He will have to make the fight ugly and not allow Mayweather to breathe. Once Mayweather is given space, that is when he begins to take control.

In my prediction of what may happen, I believe Maidana may come out strong in the first couple of rounds, but then he will start to slow his pace and the speed and accuracy of Mayweather will start another dominant performance.

I feel Maidana may get frustrated with himself being unable to land clean shots, which may result in him getting desperate by fighting dirty, (elbows, headbutt, wrestling Mayweather to the ground), leading to a couple of points taken away from him.

With Mayweather being an intelligent fighter and knowing Maidana cannot take blows to the mid-section,landing some nice stiff straight jabs to the body could hurt Maidana allowing Mayweaher to come in with a barrage of punches leading to a possible knockdown by Mayweather late in the fight.

Results: Maidana can maybe take the first couple of rounds by bullying Mayweather leading him to become defensive. After a couple of rounds with Maidana missing most of his punches, i expect Maidana’s pace to slow down and that is when Mayweather will begin to take him apart. Accuracy, constant leading right hands, and good stiff jabs to the body will hurt Maidana and can lead to a late stoppage.

Mayweather by 10th round TKO.
