David Haye: I’d like to fight Wladimir Klitschko again

haye343434By Scott Gilfoid: Former WBA heavyweight champion David Haye (26-2, 24 KO’s) says he’d like to get in the ring with IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko for a rematch. Haye, 33, was beaten by Wladimir three years ago by a 12 round unanimous decision in Germany in a fight where Haye blamed the defeat in part on an injured toe that he came into the fight with.

“I’d like to fight Wladimir again in an ideal world,” Haye said.

Haye is still slowly rehabbing a his right shoulder that he tore up late last year while training for a fight against Tyson Fury. Haye is still not able to throw punches yet, and it look like his rehab it going to be close to a year before he finds out positively whether he’ll ever be able to fight again or not. If Haye is still unable to punch without pain or power by October, then it’s highly unlikely that he’ll be able to make a comeback unless he’s willing to fight with just his left arm.

Haye can pretty much forget about a rematch against Wladimir, because that’s never going to happen unless Haye’s shoulder heals over night, and he starts taking on meaningful opposition instead of fighting the lesser guys. I just don’t see that happening though. Haye is about to turn 34 next October, and he’s not a big heavyweight. He’s short, and thin-boned without the kind of frame that he would need to compete against a real heavyweight with talent like Wladimir. Deontay Wilder would likely make quick work of Haye if he were to step inside the ring with him without head gear and huge 16 ounce gloves to protect him. These are super heavyweights, and without two good hands, Haye would be mincemeat for either of them.

Even fighting with just his left arm, Haye could probably beat the likes of Tyson Fury and beat Dereck Chisora again. Haye stopped Chisora with left hooks in their fight in 2012, so he probably wouldn’t need much more than that in a rematch.
