Is it really in Bellew’s best interest to fight Huck this year?

huck453By Daven: For those who missed it, Tony the “bomber” Bellew emerged victorious on Saturday night against Valery Brudov. Barring one round which was the seventh the Liverpool native put in a measured performance. Moreover the power that had abandoned him at Light-heavyweight has seemingly returned. Despite securing two knock downs and then the knockout in the final round, it’s integral Bellew gets at least two fights in before going for a world title.

After the fight Eddie Hearn called out Marco huck who is widely regarded as the best cruiserwight on the planet. His most notable wins are over Afalobi who is already being avoided by Bellew so how Matchroom think Bellew is ready to fight somebody like Huck is beyond me. Yes, I am aware it would be for a world title but Huck’s arsenal is too skilful for Bellew meaning Bellew cannot outbox him and moreover Huck has a very good chin so Tony’s apparent power will not be a factor.

Additionally the bomber’s chin problems were there for all to see in the seventh round against Valery; he might cite lack of concentration for his abysmal performance in the round but nonetheless he looked gone to all and he was saved by the stupidity of Brudov who decided to go low. Brudov is well past his best whilst Huck is arguably at the absolute peak of his powers; I just don’t see Bellew as a viable contender right now he should spend the next year getting used to being hit by stronger and bigger guys.

What Bellew should look to do is avenge his loss against Nathan Cleverly this year. This fight would be a really good test for him and would serve to let him know where he’s at exactly. The fact Cleverly hasn’t fought since being knocked out by Kovalev is something Matchroom should exploit, they should capitalise on the Welshman’s ring rust. Cleverly would be a tough yet rewarding fight for Bellew, firstly in financial terms it would be better than a fight with Huck and secondly Cleverly will not knockout Bellew unlike Huck. All in all there is demand for this fight to take place probably in Wales as the first time they fought it was in Liverpool.

Overall despite being a fan of Bellew I regard it as unwise to match him with Marco Huck anytime soon. He needs to get accustomed to fighting at 14 stone plus. Obtaining a fight and winning against Cleverly should be a priority for Tony as money talks and also Cleverly is rated higher in the rankings so a win over him would propel Bellew into the big time once and for all.
