Robert Garcia wants Mayweather Jr. to fight Sergio Martinez

martinez7 - CopyBy Allan Fox: Well-known trainer Robert Garcia thinks Floyd Mayweather Jr. has few options for big money fights on his remaining 4 bouts in his contract with Showtime/CBS other than him taking on a middleweight for his next Showtime pay-per-view date.

Garcia believes that Mayweather has cleaned out the welterweight and junior middleweight divisions of the top fighters, and he thinks it’s time that Mayweather seriously consider moving up to fight WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (51-2-2, 28 KO’s) next May.

It’s a fight that would have huge hurdles in putting it together because of Martinez fighting on HBO and Mayweather on Showtime. Garcia recognizes that it would be a difficult fight to put together, but he still sees this as the best option for Mayweather in putting together a big money fight for next May.

Garcia said to esnewsreporting.com “I think Mayweather has to go to 160, and face someone at 160; maybe [Sergio] Martinez. See that’s the problems – Showtime/HBO. There’s no other fights for him [Mayweather].”

Garcia’s brother Mikey Garcia, who is moving up to super featherweight, threw his own hat in the ring saying “Yeah, I’d fight him. We’ll fight right now at 147.”

Putting together a fight between Mayweather and Martinez might prove to be undo-able due to each of them fighting on different cable networks.

Mayweather Jr. would not likely agree to fight on HBO because he’s the bigger name, and Martinez might not be able to get permission from HBO to fight on Showtime.

Besides that problem, it would be a risky fight for Mayweather to agree to face Martinez given all the injuries that Martinez has suffered recently in his fights.

It wouldn’t be a good situation for Mayweather to agree to fight Martinez if he didn’t feel confident that he could make it out of a training camp without going down with some kind of injury that would delay the fight from taking place.

It would be a real nightmare for Mayweather to plan a fight with Rodriguez for May, but then have to postpone the fight when Rodriguez suffers an injury in training.

Martinez is going to be 39-years-old in February, and that’s a ripe age to be still fighting, especially if you have a history of injuries like Martinez.

Mayweather might be better off fighting someone else. WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin has been mentioned n lot by hardcore boxing fans as a potential good opponent for Mayweather for next May, but that’s a fight few casual boxing fans would really care about.

Golvokin is an unknown in the United States, and there’s not a huge pool of Kazakhstan fans in the U.S to give him an instant fan base like there was for Saul “Canelo” Alvarez with his Mexican fans in his fight with Mayweather on September 14th.
