fury333By Scott Gilfoid: Heavyweight Hughie Fury (9-0, 6 KO’s) will be fighting this Sunday against fellow Brit Dorian Darch (7-1, 1 KO’s) in a scheduled 6 round bout at the York Hall, Bethnal Green, in London, UK.

This is a fight that’s pretty much in the same category as Hughie’s two fights against Moses Matovu (4-28-4).

It’s a step down for Hughie from his last fight against cruiserweight Shane McPhilbin, because there’s no way on earth that a limited fighter like Darch would ever beat McPhilbin. Fury was taking some heavy head shots from McPhilbin before he suffered a shoulder injury to his left shoulder.

Darch, 29, was blown out by Ian Lewison by a 4th round TKO last year in December. Lewison is a limited fighter as well, but he looked like another Lennox Lewis compared to Darch and the fight ended up being a mismatch.

Hughie is going to have to start thinking about stepping it up at some point if he wants to break Mike Tyson’s record for being the youngest fighter to ever win a world title. I think it’s a pipe dream myself, and the fact that Hughie is fighting guys like Darch and McPhilbin gives you a pretty good idea of the futility of Hughie ever breaking Tyson’s record.

Hughie regularly spars with Tyson Fury. I’m not sure if that’s something that is helping him or not, because Fury has a ton of bad habits starting with his tendency to slap with his punches. I’ve seeing Hughie slap a lot with his shots lately as well, and I think that might be a product of Hughie’s sparring Tyson Fury.

Hughie needs to really get on a serious weight program, because he’s too weak right now to compete against world class opposition. His upper body looks more like a pool player than a heavyweight, and he needs to put on some serious muscle for him to be able to match up against the world class fighters. Hughie isn’t naturally strong like Deontay Wilder. He needs to go on a serious weight program for the next 3 years so that when he’s in his early 20s, he’s got a little muscle on his frame.

I don’t care that he’s 19. Hughie looks like 28-years-old, and I think he might be one of those fighters that matures fast for his age and doesn’t necessarily improve as they get older. In other words, Hughie Fury might be about as good as he’ll ever be skill-wise. That’s why I recommend that he start pumping some iron so he can develop whatever is there.
