Khan no longer excited about Devon Alexander fight

khan43By Scott Gilfoid: It looks like Amir Khan is losing interest in the fight that Golden Boy Promotions wants him to take against IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander.

Khan has been talking about the Alexander fight for eons now, but suddenly Khan’s focus has shifted from Alexander to Floyd Mayweather Jr. for some reason, and it’s starting to look like Khan doesn’t want to risk his hide in the fight against Alexander on December 7th.

Sports Illustrated writer Chris Mannix said “When asked, @GoldenBoyBoxing’s Richard Schaefer told me that “it still looks like” DA/Khan in December but ‘who knows, that might change.’ Hearing that @AmirKingKhan – @TheRealDevonA is far from a lock for December, largely because of Khan’s lack of interest in the fight.”

Now why would Khan be getting cold feet about the Devon Alexander fight? I can tell you why. It’s a really tough and dangerous fight for the fragile-chinned Khan, and he’s got to know that if he gets whipped by Alexander, he can permanently forget about a fight against Mayweather.

There wouldn’t be enough time for Khan to turn his career around and build up enough wins for Mayweather to reconsider a fight with him. At best, Mayweather only has 4-6 fights left in his boxing career.

He’s hang around for 3 years for Khan to redeem himself after yet another loss. Heck, Khan still hasn’t redeemed himself after his losses to Danny Garcia and Lamont Peterson. I mean, I don’t count light welterweight Carlos Molina and a past his prime Julio Diaz as the types of opponents where you can consider Khan to have redeemed himself.

If that’s all takes for Khan to redeem himself after his losses to Garcia and Peterson, then that’s a pretty sad statement about boxing.

It looks like Khan wants to bypass the dangerous Alexander fight and go straight to Mayweather for his next fight in May, if Mayweather elects to fight Khan.

It’s pretty sad if he does, because little Carlos Molina and a WAY past his prime Julio Diaz aren’t enough for Khan to have redeemed himself in my book.

Besides that, I had Khan losing to Julio Diaz. The judges scored the fight a 12 round unanimous decision, but I had Diaz winning that fight by 2 rounds. It took place in the UK, so I can’t say I’m surprised that Khan got the win over there.
