Angel Garcia(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Dan Ambrose: WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia’s dad Angel Garcia hasn’t reacted too well this week with fans showing massive support for Danny’s opponent Lucas Matthysse (34-2, 32 KO’s). Garcia and Matthysse will be facing off against each other this Saturday night in the co-feature bout on the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Saul “Canelo”Alvarez fight card at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Angel Garcia hasn’t enjoyed seeing the attention that Matthysse is getting, because he feels that Danny should be the one that’s being talked up and not Matthysse. It finally got to the point where Angel was starting to snap at reporters during interviews when they were speaking too much about Matthysse and not enough about Danny Garcia.

During the final press conference, Angel Garcia went into a long rant where he appeared to be lecturing the fans for their support of Matthysse. Angel said “People still underestimate the champion. The same country that sends you a welfare check. You sign, don’t you? Then you’re an Americanito. Vegas don’t know nothing, you don’t know nothing. I know everything.”

Angel continued with his rant until Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer stepped in and finally took over, because Angel was going off in directions that didn’t seem make any sense.

I didn’t quite understand why Angel was mentioning the welfare check thing. I would hope that he wasn’t inferring that only poor Americans are siding with Matthysse, because that’s not the case. Plenty of middle class and wealthy Americans believe that Matthysse is going to beat Garcia on Saturday night and beat him badly.

Matthysse said “Hopefully, he comes toward me. I think we’ll both be aggressive. I can take it.”
Garcia has said that he plans on coming straight at Matthysse on Saturday night to try and land some big shots right off the bat. Whether he actually does this or not remains to be seen. It’ll be a dangerous thing for Danny if he does this because Zab Judah had him in trouble in his last fight, and Judah’s not the puncher that Matthysse is.
