canelo6By Dan Ambrose: The Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez press tour will be traveling to Houston, Texas this Monday, July 1st for a press conference open to the boxing public at 1:00 p.m. at the Minute Maid Park Union Station at 501 Crawford Street.

If you thought Mayweather was booed a lot in his press tours in Chicago, Grand Rapids and New York, just wait to hear the kind of booing that Mayweather Jr. will get in Houston. That’s going to be nonstop booing from Canelo’s loyal fans.

I just hope that Golden Boy Promotions has loud enough speakers so that Mayweather can be heard over the booing from Canelo’s fans because it would sad to hear Mayweather’s important words drowned out by the horde.

It’s strange how Canelo’s fans are louder than Mayweather’s when Mayweather is the much more popular fighter than the 22-year-old Canelo in the United States. I attribute the large turnout for Canelo to the marketing that Golden Boy is doing.

Canelo’s fans from each city are coming out in huge numbers to support him, whereas you’re not getting quite the same with Mayweather’s fans. Again, it doesn’t mean that Canelo is more popular than Mayweather; it just shows you how loyal Canelo’s fans are that they’re willing to make the effort to come see him speak.

What I’d like to see in Monday’s press conference is for the fighters to come up with a little more fire and intensity with what they’re saying because they’re both pretty mild with their comments, and the face offs are seem to lack the intensity that you usually see from a Mayweather fight.

Perhaps Mayweather feels uncomfortable going off on a guy that’s so much younger than him. Mayweather is 14 years older than Canelo and that’s got to be a little uncomfortable. I wouldn’t feel good tearing into some 14 years younger than me. I’d feel kind of guilty of doing that.

Canelo definitely needs to loosen a little bit because he looks uptight and doesn’t seem to show a lot of emotion when he’s up front of the crowds.
