Canelo con los Reynoso(Photo credit: Leopoldo Gonzalez) By Chris Williams: Today at the New York press conference between Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) both fighters were respectful and polite with one another.

One got the sense that they were both playing the nice guy role in trying to promote their September 14th pay per view bout on Showtime. Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer kind of went overboard in refereeing to Canelo as the Mexican James Dean and gushing over his looks when announcing him to the audience.

Mayweather said this “The earth is my turf. You can put me in any ring and I will always come out victorious. He earned his right to be up here with me. Come September 14th, it’s best vs. the best. I wish we could have fought in Madison Square Garden.”

Canelo said “This is my time. Everybody knows Floyd’s the best without question. But this is my time and we’re gonna win.”

Oscar De La Hoya was making a lot of faces during the press conference and it almost looked like he was disappointed with how tame the conference was because it didn’t have the excitement and sparks that were there in 2007 when a younger Floyd Mayweather Jr. and De La Hoya were hyping their fights.

Mayweather Jr. trash talked De La Hoya continuously and did a great job of attracting interest in the fight. We didn’t see that today and I have a feeling that it’s going to stay this way for the remaining 10 press conferences to go.

They’re going to have to do something to attract some interest in this fight because both fighters were putting the audience to sleep. Mayweather Jr. spent 90 percent of the time thanking different people, as if it was an award ceremony.

I’m not sure that he was briefed on what he needed to do when he got out there, and Canelo wasn’t any better. He looked wooden, showed little emotion and stood perfectly still almost like a mannequin. He needs to loosen up if he wants to hype the fight.

Hopefully in the next tour stop they can do a better job of getting people interested in the fight because today it was very boring.
