Groves: I hope Froch beats Kessler on Saturday

froch9By Scott Gilfoid: Super middleweight George Groves isn’t holding a grudge after being branded disloyal by IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch (30-2, 22 KO’s) just because Groves wanted to get some spare change and a taste of what it’s like in the ring to be in with talent in his recent sparring with Froch’s adversary WBA super middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler (46-2, 35 KO’s) for this Saturday night. Groves says he’s still hoping Froch wins.

Groves said to thesun.co.uk “Come fight night, I’ll be supporting the British guy [Froch] and I hope he wins.”

Oh, how nice that it is. Groves is supporting the Brit. It’s too bad that’s probably not going to be any help for Froch when he’s out there eating jabs and struggling to land his punches against Kessler. Unless Groves wants to go out there with Froch and team up 2 on 1 against Kessler, I don’t see it helping Froch that yet another one of his British fans will be supporting him on Saturday.

As it is, Froch figures he’ll have 90% of the fans on his side when he steps inside the O2 Arena in London, UK. With that yapping going on and that singing, I hardly think he’s going to hear one more voice cheering Froch to victory.

Groves says he has a good idea who’ll be the winner on Saturday night, saying to the telegraph.co.uk “I’ve had a better look at both of them than most have, and for me there’s a clear winner, but I can’t share. It wouldn’t be fair to the lads.”

It hardly matters if Groves shares or not, and he needed even had mentioned that because it’s not as if his opinion is any different on the matter than anyone else’s. If Groves thinks Froch will be the one to win based on his sparring with Kesskler, he’ll be guessing big time. Who knows how those sparring sessions went. For all we know, Kessler was taking it easy on Groves because it was sparring.

If Groves thinks Kessler will win, he still doesn’t know because Kessler could get royally jobbed by the judges on Saturday night. The fight is in the UK and Kessler is the visiting fighter. We already saw Froch get a controversial victory over Andre Dirrell while fighting in the UK in 2009, and Saturday’s fight with Kessler will only be Froch’s third fight in the UK in the last four years. His last two fights in the UK have both been stoppages over Lucian Bute and Yusaf Mack, so the judges didn’t play a part in those fights.
