By Scott Gilfoid: #1 WBO contender Jose Gonzalez (22-0, 17 KO’s) has already mapped out how he’s going to beat WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) and take his World Boxing Organization 135 lb. strap this Saturday night at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow, Scotland, and that’s by putting the Scottish Burns under heavy pressure all night long and hitting him as hard as he can when he’s able to catch up to him.

Gonzalez said to I Film London “I’m going to hit him [Burns] hard and pressure him, and when I catch him I’m going to hit him hard.”

I like how Gonzalez adds the part where he says “when I catch him” because that tells me he knows he’s going to have to chase Burns around the ring on Saturday night. Burns isn’t going to voluntarily stand there making it easy for the hard hitting Gonzalez to land his big shots.

Burns won’t want to taste his hard punching, and so he’ll be on his bike all night long to try and avoid his big shots. When Burns isn’t on his bike, I see him holding onto Gonzalez one way or another.

Whether it be an arm bar or a tight clinch, I see Burns holding on to keep from getting hit. The fight could end up being a fight that takes place at close quarters with each guy throwing shots while in a clinch, not that Gonzalez will be the one holding on.

Burns’ promoter Eddie Hearn compares Gonzalez to former Burns opponent Roman “Rocky” Martinez. He sees him as fighting with a similar style and having similar power. I don’t see those two fighters being anything like each. Gonzalez is a much bigger puncher than Martinez, and he can hurt you with either hand with just single shots.

Burns isn’t going to be able to take the big shots from Gonzalez for 12 rounds without hitting the deck.
