Deontay Wilder vs. Dereck Chisora: Baby steps

wilder46By Daniel Mcglinchey: Recently arrested American heavyweight Deontay Wilder (28-0, 28 KO’s) is scheduled to return to England next month to face second tier Brit Dereck Chisora (16-4, 10 KO’s) at Wembley Arena June 15th. Dereck is a strange character, who is perhaps better known for his antics outside the ring rather than in.

Chisora has not one win over a credible opponent and looked awful in his latest outing against an unknown journeyman Hector Alfrdedo Avila (20-12-1, 13 KO’s). Derek has lost 4 of his last 6 to the likes of Tyson Fury, David Haye, Robert Helenius and Vitali Klitschko.

Credit to Tyson for beating him, Dereck was unbeaten at the time and held the British Heavyweight title.

But since there bout in 2011 he has rapidly gone downhill, his power seems to of diminished and he has some serious self control issues.

I’m not surprised Deontay has took on another soft opponent, he’s taking baby steps towards a world title shot and isn’t prepared to take risks, eventually he may get his wish but the clock is ticking, there’s younger more talented guys in the division in my opinion.

In my opinion Dereck will plod around the ring, occasionally throwing an overhand right but won’t be successful, Deontay will stay at distance working the jab and will wait for Chisora to make a mistake then he will pounce and throw a wild right followed by a crazed combination that is uncoordinated and isn’t pleasant to the eye, much like we saw in Deontay’s latest outing when he took on the now retired Audley Harrison where he threw wild punches at a sitting target and still managed to miss the majority.

This fight will be a Wilder win, 2 years ago it would of been a contest, but due to Dereck’s inactivity, mental troubles, heavy defeats and deteriorating skill set I see Wilder landing one of his telegraphed shots fairly early on, Chisora’s defence is poor, and I see a TKO round 4.
