Devon Alexander to fight on May 18th with or without Kell Brook

alexander4334By Scott Gilfoid: Britain’s Kell Brook (29-0, 19 KO’s) better hope his injured foot has a miraculous recovery because of it’s not healed by May 18th in time for his title challenge against IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander (24-1, 13 KO’s), then Brook may end up waiting an awful long time before he gets another shot at the title.

Alexander’s promoter at Golden Boy Promotions Richard Schaefer is saying that Alexander will be fighting on May 18th against somebody. If it’s Brook, then it’s all good, but if he can’t make it to the fight due to his aching feet then that’s on him.

Alexander will fight somebody else and Brook will either have to wait another four to six months for another chance or he’ll have to look elsewhere for another welterweight champion to fight.

My advice for Brook is to take care of his feet and his ankles when training because the second time he’s been injured while getting ready for this fight and you have to wonder what’s happening with the guys ankles and feet.

Alexander’s trainer/manager Kevin Cunningham said to ESPN “Can you believe this clown Brook?…He’s [Alexander] ready to go May 18th, with Brook or without him. I’m keeping Devon focused on fighting May 18th. If Brook’s not ready it’s time to move on to the next available (contender).”

Schaefer confirmed with Dan Rafael of ESPN that if Brook can’t take the fight on May 18th, then they’re going to find someone else for Alexander to fight.

I totally agree with Cunningham and Schaefer. You can’t have Cunningham put his career into suspended animation just because Brook’s lower extremities can’t make it through a training camp without getting hurt over and over again.

Alexander’s promoter needs to speak with the International Boxing Federation to have Brook sent to the back of the line and wait behind the other contenders because when you suffer more than one injury that delays the fight, then that’s just too much time going buy for the champion, who needs to make a living. Plus, the sanctioning bodies need to make a living as well, so you can’t have one fighter fouling things up by getting hurt 24/7. Getting hurt once is one thing, but when you’re talking two injuries that cause the fight to be postponed, then that’s just too much.
