Everybody wants a piece of Mayweather Jnr

floyd66By Babatis Banda: He once said ‘all roads lead to Mayweather Jnr’. On several other occasions, he has also baldly stated that he is the face of boxing. What I find intriguing is the fact that a horde of boxers are baying his name.

Other than the fighters themselves, there is a ‘movement’ of a frustrated group of so called boxing fans, who are no more than just ‘armchair’ critics or what I would call ‘keyboard warriors’ that are dedicated to smear Mayweather junior with any kind of accusation no matter how absurd. This group has gone to extends of determining who Mayweather Jnr should fight and who he should not, and in doing so they seem to have found satisfaction and a temporary escape from their misery.

All manner of boxers from what I can rightly call ‘bums’ and even those in different weight classes are baying Mayweather’s name. A perfect example is an astonishing behaviour by Saul Alvares. How can Canelo give Mayweather Jnr an ultimatum and expect him to fall in line? Then there is the little known Cornelius Bundrage (32-5-19) who thinks he can knock the un beaten Mayweather’s head off, even when spotting such a record. Golovkin, who fights at 160 lbs says it would be an honour to fight Mayweather who fights basically at 147 lbs. There are some sincere fighters who really would love to test themselves against this great athlete, but many others are just seeking possibly, the biggest pay cheques of their careers.

If you look around today, there isn’t a single active fighter that carries the clout that Mayweather does, despite being relatively inactive. For the ‘keyboard worriers’ Mayweather should fight Martinez, a fighter that walks around 170 lbs, or he is scared. I am wondering why nobody is insisting that Martinez fights Andre Ward, or Mayweather fights Marquez for the second time.

I wonder how Martinez’s name keeps popping up when the two are definitely in different weight classes. Some are crying foul about Robert Guerrero. They say Floyd cherry picked Guerrero. Real boxing fans do understand that he has earned this chance. He is also the mandatory challenger to Mayweather’s championship belt.

There is one thing for sure, when you are the best at what you do, others will look outside of the normal, just to test you or to pull you down.

Mayweather is at the centre of this sport and rightly so, the face of boxing. Who would still question that all roads lead to Mayweather jnr?.
