Wilder: I want the big fights in 2014

wilder52By Scott Gilfoid: Unbeaten heavyweight Deontay Wilder (27-0, 27 KO’s) says he’s ready to take out all the stops in his career and move it to the next level starting in 2014. The young 27-year-old Wilder says he’s ready to go after the Klitschko brothers to take their titles next year, and he’s not going to wait them out until they retire like some fighters appear to be doing.

Wilder doesn’t want to wait until he’s 30 before he makes his move because he believes in himself enough to where he thinks he’s capable of chopping down the Klitschkos right now.

Wilder said to eastsideboxing.com “In the next year I want big fights and title fights.”

Wilder is arguably ready to go after the world titles in 2013, but it looks like his promoters at Golden Boy Promotions want to take a little more time with this huge talent before they spring him loose on the top heavyweights in the division.

They know what they have in this talent. Wilder captured a bronze medal in the 2008 Olympics in the heavyweight division despite having only a small handful of fights under his belt beforehand.

Thus far, the 6’7” Wilder hasn’t had any competitive fights since turning pro. It’s not that he’s weak opposition because we saw him in with a very capable Kelvin Price recently, and Wilder ripped through him like he wasn’t even there in stopping him in the 3rd round last year in December.

In his last fight, Wilder stopped Matt Greer in the 2nd round in an impressive performance that wowed the Mexican crowd at the Centro de Convenciones, Villahermosa, Tabasco, Mexico. Wilder put Greer down three times in the fight with a beautiful demonstration of power punching. It was a thing of beauty to watch Wilder in that fight because the power was like nothing I’ve been before from a heavyweight in the division.

Wilder has a few contenders that could potentially give him a run for the money in 2014, such as Kubrat Pulev, Bryant Jennings and Chris Arreola. Those guys are plenty tough, and if Wilder can get past those fighters then I have no doubts that he can capture a world title.
