Guerrero to use Cotto’s fight against Mayweather as the blueprint in how to win on May 4th

guerrero452By Allan Fox: Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KO’s) was impressed with how Miguel Cotto fought Floyd Mayweather Jr. (43-0, 26 KO’s) last May in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Cotto lost the fight by a 12 round unanimous decision, but he was able to use his timing to land a lot of punches in a fight that he was in the position to win until gassing out in the last three rounds of the fight.

Guerrero said to KNBR 680 in the Bay Area “Timing has to do with everything and that’s what Miguel Cotto did very well. He timed a lot of his shots, and exchanged when he needed to exchange.”

Cotto gave Mayweather fits with his timing, pressure and power. Mayweather wasn’t ready for that kind of attack by Cotto, and he really struggled until Cotto faded in the last quarter of the fight.

Cotto used up everything he had while trying to score a knockout in the 8th, and when he failed to take Mayweather out in that round, Cotto had nothing left the remainder of the fight.

Guerrero doesn’t have the power or the jab that Cotto had going for him against Mayweather, but he does have the same ability to apply a lot of pressure on Mayweather. That may be enough for Guerrero to win the fight if he stays on top of Mayweather for the full 12 rounds. He can’t give Mayweather any breathing room because that’s the only way Mayweather will be able to win the fight.

He’s not going to be able to match Guerrero’s high work rate. Mayweather, 36, is too old to beat Guerrero by out-landing him, and he’s not going to be able to match Guerrero’s inside skills. Mayweather will try and get space between him and Guerrero so that he can slow down the pace of the fight and pot shot his way to victory.
