Matthysse-Dallas Jr: Lucas needs to win impressively

matthysseBy Allan Fox: WBC interim light welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse (32-2, 30 KO’s) is hoping to attract interest in a fight later this year between him and WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia. That’s the fight that Matthysse has been looking for and he could be on the verge of getting it as long as he wins his next fight on January 26th against Mike Dallas Jr. (19-2-1, 8 KO’s) at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

In this case it’s not just about winning the fight but looking good in doing so.

Matthysse will no doubt be winning on January 26th against the light hitting Dallas Jr., but he’s got to win in such a manner that boxing fans are interested in seeing him fight Danny Garcia. That means that Matthysse can’t afford to struggle in this fight. He’s got to knock Dallas Jr. out just as Josesito Lopez did two years ago in January 2011.

Lopez really put on Dallas Jr., forcing him to brawl and then halting him. Matthysse will have to go after Dallas Jr. in the same way if he wants to make sure that he can get him out of there quick. What Matthysse can’t do is fight Dallas Jr. the same way he did in his loss to Zab Judah in 2010.

That loss was controversial because Matthysse dominated the last 8 rounds of the fight, he made the mistake of starting too passively in the first four rounds against the best his best Judah, and that let Judah get off to a fast start in the first four rounds.

If Matthysse fights that way against Dallas Jr, he’ll find himself down just as he was against Judah and will have to try and climb out of that hole. Dallas Jr. now is about as good as Judah was back then in 2008 when Matthysse fought him, and he’s someone that you can’t let get off to a quick start because he’ll pick up confidence and beat you.
