Warren likes Groves’ chances against Abraham in 2013

groves43By Scott Gilfoid: Frank Warren, the promoter for Commonwealth super middleweight champion George Groves (16-0, 12 KO’s), really likes his chances in a possible future fight against WBO super middleweight champion Arthur Abraham (36-3, 28 KO’s) next year in either the UK or Germany. Warren thinks the 24-year-old Groves can win no matter where the fight is staged.

Warren said to thesun.co.uk “Super middleweight star George Groves is now leading challenger to Germany’s Arthur Abraham and we fancy that very strongly at home or abroad.”

Here’s my take on this. I don’t think Groves is ready for a fighter as powerful and as experienced as Abraham. Groves looked vulnerable in getting hit in his last fight against Glen Johnson on December 15th of this month. Johnson, who is clearly a shot fighter, threw very few punches in the fight, yet he was able to hurt Abraham on at least two occasions.

Now imagine what a much busier and much stronger Abraham will do to Groves. It’ll be bad for Groves and I see him getting knocked out. Groves seems to fancy himself as a power puncher, but the reality is he’s more of a slapper with little power along the same lines as James DeGale. He’s lacking in the power department and he’ll be in trouble in a fight against Abraham.

But there is a positive to Groves fighting Abraham. At least Groves will get a good payday in losing the fight, and maybe he’ll learn something that he hasn’t learned in his 16 prior fights.

Right now, I don’t think Groves is capable of beating any of the current super middleweight champions. I think he’s young enough to wait some of them out until they’re old and retire. Groves can then move in and maybe get lucky and pick up one of the straps. I don’t know though because there are guys young enough to be around when the top champions retire and then move in to capture the titles.

Groves really should think twice before he takes on Abraham because that’s a loss for Groves if he takes that fight.
