Walsh amused that people see Ricky Burns whipping him on December 15th

By Scott Gilfoid: For some reason #13 WBO Liam Walsh (13-0, 10 KO’s) is pleased that boxing fans are seeing him as just another one of WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns’ typical fodder opponents for their December 15th fight at the ExCel Arena, Dockland, in London, United Kingdom. This makes the 26-year-old Walsh happy because he believes it’ll take the pressure off of him in this fight so that if fights well he’ll surprise some people.

Walsh said to Sky Sports News “I find it amusing that people are calling it a mismatch and I hope it carries on like that, because it takes the pressure off me.”

Believe me, Walsh, it’s going to stay like that. No one sees you as having a chance in this fight, and no one will. The unfortunate thing is boxing fans have seen your last fight against little known, soft-punching Domenico Urbano and they saw how you were out on your feet in the first round after he tapped you with a nothing of a left hand and boxing fans think you don’t belong in there with Burns. I happen to agree with them. Burns is going to whip you badly and it’s not going to be interesting to watch.

I wish Walsh had the talent to pull off an upset against Burns because perhaps we’d see some more interesting fights lined up with Walsh as the champion instead of Burns. But I can’t see Walsh doing anything other getting squashed by the bigger and more experience Burns on December 15th.

For a domestic level fighter, Walsh doesn’t look half bad. I thought Walsh looked good for a local lad against Paul Appleby last year in September. Walsh really beat the brakes off of Appleby in that fight, but there’s a huge gulf in talent between Appleby and Burns, and I just see Walsh as being a rung or two below Burns.

It doesn’t matter whether Walsh has pressure on him or not in this fight. He’s still going to get whipped like no tomorrow by Burns and that’s all there is to it.

I’d like to see Burns step it up and fight the American boxing talent Adrien Broner after he trounces Walsh next month, but I guess that’s too much to ask of Burns. I suspect we’ll see Burns fighting another Brit after this fight, someone like Gavin Rees or maybe Scott Harrison. Those are nice little mismatches that I can see Burns doing well in.
