Mayweather isn’t as great as he likes to say

Image: Mayweather isn’t as great as he likes to sayBy Mark Calooke: One of the most talented and colourful characters boxing has seen in this era is certainly Floyd Mayweather. He has won numerous titles in numerous weight divisions. He is the highest earning athlete in the world, thanks to Al Haymon. His defensive skills are beyond the capabilities of anyone boxer in the world.

The famous shoulder roll has only been made so famous because of the perfection demonstrated when Floyd performs the move (some people think Mayweather invented it which is untrue).

I have outlined all of these achievements above to show that I don’t hate Floyd Mayweather. In fact I am a huge fan that feels Mayweather should have achieved much more. What I am saying is based on facts I have seen and not based on hate.

Floyds Mayweather’s career has been carefully planned out for him. He says he is his own boss which isn’t strictly true. He has managers and Oscar De La Hoya is his promoter. The only thing that makes Mayweather different to other boxers is that he can pick who promotes him at any time. It’s a fight-by-fight contract. Each person has a plan to make sure Mayweather keeps winning and earning maximum cash for them and himself. Mayweather has made a habit of picking fighters at the right time. The timing is based on their prime. He fights them either just before or just after their peak. in 7 years Mayweather has only faced one boxer in his prime and that was Ricky Hatton. Hatton was tailor made for Mayweather and that’s why he was picked. In fact this has been the story for Mayweather’s entire career. He picks primed fighters who are tailor made for him and the rest he picks at the right time.

I actually find it heartbreaking because I think Floyd could be great. He is capable of beating the people he didn’t face in their primes. Cotto and Mosley had both been asking Mayweather for a fight for years. Why the delay? Floyd Mayweather has been in big fights but rarely has a good win. Larry Holmes beat Muhammad Ali in a huge fight, but it wasn’t a big win. Danny Williams stopped Mike Tyson in a huge fight, but it wasn’t a big win. You can’t call yourself great just because you have beaten big names. You have to beat them when they are actually good. Mayweather could have been an all time great. he was good enough. Sadly he won’t be remembered at all, and all because he and his team wanted him to carry on winning and earning. It seems like such a waste. Of course people will disagree but looking at his record and the records of his opponents, the timing for perfect for a victory.
