Both guys have a lot to prove as neither are considered the true top of the division. Berto was beaten by Victor Ortiz last year in April in a fight in which Berto was knocked down twice in losing by a 12 round decision.

Guerrero said to the Boxingsocialist.com “It’s going to be…a war…I want to be known as one of the greats…I’m hungry to be the best ever.”

If Guerrero is serious about wanting to be one of the best ever then he really should consider moving back down to lightweight or super featherweight because he’s fighting in the wrong weight class and he doesn’t have the body to fight at this weight class. Choose any fighter that’s perfect for a weight class like Guerrero was at super featherweight and lightweight and then ask them to move up two to three divisions.

They’ll likely not be the same fighter they once were at the lighter weights. This is Guerrero’s predicament. He wasn’t to be the best ever but he doesn’t have the frame or the body type for him to do that at welterweight. He’s 5’8″ and that was a huge advantage for him when he fought from 126 to 135, but at 147, 5’8″ isn’t a big deal, and he doesn’t have incredible speed or power to make up for what he lost in moving up in weight.

Berto has fought once since then beating Jan Zaveck last year in September. That fight really didn’t prove anything because it ended prematurely in the 5th when Zaveck’s right eye swelled up and forced the stoppage.

Berto looked like he was starting to fade in the fight just as he had in his loss to Ortiz. Berto has had bad luck ever since then with him rupturing his left biceps muscle, which put off a rematch against Ortiz. And then Berto later tested positive for a banned substance. That completely finished any hope of him fighting Ortiz for a second time.

Berto was cleared of the mess after it was discovered that some of the dietary supplements he had taken was contaminated. However, Berto still ended up losing a year of his career from the injury and then the positive drug test. He’s now ready to fight again and this is a tough fight for a guy coming off of a one-year layoff.

Berto no doubt has the speed and power advantage over Guerrero. But there’s going to be a question mark about Berto’s stamina due to the long time off between fights and his already questionable stamina.
