Image: Bute may not fight Froch nextBy Scott Gilfoid: IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch may not like the news that I’m about to reveal to him but that’s the way it goes. Former IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute’s team are considering having Bute take another fight in early 2013 instead of the Froch rematch. It’s not for sure yet but it’s a possibility that Bute’s team will match-up against someone else because he needs a little more fine tuning before facing Froch in a crucial fight.

Bute’s trainer Stephan Larouche told journaldequebec.com “We have not completed our analysis and we feel that if Lucian needs another fight preparation [go get him ready for the Froch rematch] then it is clear we will give it to him. It is not for us, but we do it for him.”

I totally agree with Mr. Larouche. He’s very wise. I think in light of how Bute fought in defeating Denis Grachev last Saturday night, Bute needs at least one good fight under his belt before he faces Froch in a rematch. I was really impressed with a lot of things that Bute did in that fight, as he showed me a lot in terms of his heart, chin and boxing skills. However, Bute didn’t look really confident in the fight until the 12th round.

That was the old Bute showing his skills and looking mentally like the fighter he was previous to the loss to Froch last May. However, Bute needs a full fight of looking like that and not just one round. For that reason I think it would be a really smart thing for Bute and his team to go in another direction in the first part of next year when it comes time for him to fight again. Froch can just put a sock in it and wait.

It’s not as if he doesn’t have other options available for him. He can fight Mikkel Kessler in a rematch or Andre Ward. Heck, Froch has been lipping off about wanting to fight Ward again. Well, here’s his chance. If Kessler can’t take the fight then Froch needs to fight Ward straight away. Of course, I know probably won’t because that’s like going to the head of the class before he’s still struggling at the elementary subjects.

Bute shouldn’t be rushed into this fight with Froch because there’s too much riding on the fight. Bute can’t afford to lose another fight like that against Froch.
