Edgar Berlanga Claims Canelo Fight “In the Works” for September

#1 WBA super middleweight contender Edgar Berlanga thinks a fight between him and Canelo Alvarez is “in the works” for September.

Berlanga (22-0, 17 KOs) even uploaded a fight poster of him and Canelo on X, with the wording, “The Battle of Mexico & Puerto Rico, Canelo – Berlanga, September 2024.”

Last Saturday night, at the Canelo vs. Jaime Munguia fight, Berlanga was living it up, cruising around the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, listening to Mexican music, singing, and being mobbed by fans who believe he’s going to be Alvarez’s next opponent in September.

It’s like Berlanga, 26, is already counting the millions he’ll be getting for that fight against Canelo.

“It’s in the works. We’re about to blow this s*** up the right way,” said Edgar Berlanga to Fighthype last Saturday night when asked if he’s fighting Canelo Alvarez in September.

Social Media Says: “LOL, No.”

Fans on social media are not happy. They say they don’t want to see Canelo defend his undisputed super middleweight championship against Berlanga, who they feel hasn’t earned the shot against him.

If it happens, the boxing public will highly criticize Canelo because Berlanga is still a newbie, and has yet to fight a true contender during his career.

The Brooklyn, New York native Berlanga hasn’t fought anyone remotely resembling a real threat and is just another manufactured fighter.

Berlanga has not fought anyone yet and passed up on challenging for a world title when he became WBA ‘regular’ super middleweight champion David Morrell Jr. ‘s mandatory earlier this year after his sixth-round knockout win over Padraig McCrory last February.

They’d rather see Canelo fight David Benavidez than Berlanga, who has been spoon-fed soft opposition his entire eight-year professional career.

The Secret Ingredient: Matchroom Magic

However, Berlanga is promoted by Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn, and he has a close relationship with Canelo. With Berlanga promoted by Hearn, there’s a very good chance he’s next up for Canelo in September on PPV.

If that fight happens, it’s not priced at the same $89.99 as last night’s match between Canelo and Jaime Munguia because the undercard was horrible, filled with mismatches, and a boring co-feature between WBC interim welterweight champion Mario Barrios and Fabian Maidana.

There would be less gripe from the boxing public about Canelo defending against Berlanga next if the New Yorker had fought some of these contenders to earn his shot:

Caleb Plant
Christian Mbilli
David Benavidez
David Morrell
Diego Pacheco
