Mayweather Sr., who has a big impact on shaping he fighting style of Dawson during his time as his trainer, was especially upset with seeing Dawson quit in the 10th round after getting knocked down by Ward. Mayweather Sr. felt that Dawson could and should have kept fighting.

Speaking with Fighthype.com, Mayweather Sr. said “The best he [Dawson] ever looked was with Floyd Mayweather Sr. He ain’t looked that good sense. He ain’t no f***** fighter…He quit when he could still fight…Ain’t got no balls.”

Well, in fairness to Dawson, he was just soaking up one-way punishment in the Ward fight and looked both confused and weight drained if that’s possible. Dawson wasn’t even trying to throw punches and just looked frozen, unable to pull the trigger or come up with some ideas to try and win the fight. Ward put Dawson down three times in the fight, once in the 3rd, 4th and 10th rounds. Dawson was a sucker for Ward’s left hook and nearly defenseless to try and stop the shot. Maybe if Dawson was fighting at his own weight of 175 and had a plan in how to deal with Ward, he could have fought a little better.

I think it might be a little than just the weight and the game plan. Dawson seems to have really aged in terms of his game since his first fight with Glen Johnson in 2008. Dawson won a grueling 12 round decision in a fight where he was hit with a lot of head shots. From that fight on, Dawson was never able to fight with the same kind of intensity. He still won most of his fights after that, but against largely older fighters.

I don’t think Mayweather Sr. would be able to fix all the problems in Dawson’s game even if he started training him again. I think Dawson is stuck where he is right now and will only move down in the coming years.
