Bunce: Khan will sack Virgil Hunter sooner or later

By William Mackay: Writer Steve Bunce sees Amir Khan’s new trainer Virgil Hunter as little more than the flavor of the month in terms of boxing trainers, and he doesn’t see this relationship lasting very long. Bunce believes that Hunter is about as good as Khan’s last trainer Freddie Roach.

Bunce sees the same problems coming about when Khan steps it up against the likes of Danny Garcia and Lamont Peterson. Once Khan tastes defeat again, Bunce believes Hunter will be sent packing much like Roach was.

In his column at ESPN.co.uk, Bunce said “If and when Khan struggles in a rematch with Lamont Peterson or Danny Garcia, then Hunter will be sacked…If Hunter thinks he’s going to suddenly change Khan, then he’s mad.”

Bunce doesn’t see Khan as having as much room for change now compared to when Roach first got him. Roach has taught Khan a lot of things, so it won’t be new stuff when Hunter begins training him. There won’t be a lot of room for Hunter to make the major changes that Roach made to Khan’s game.

I do agree with Bunce that Hunter will be booted eventually, but I don’t see it happening after Khan’s first loss. It’ll take at least two defeats by Khan for him to give Hunter the boot, unless the two aren’t getting on well with one another. In that case, Hunter will be gone after Khan’s first fight if he losses. Hunter will not stay Khan’s trainer if he wins the next fight.

Bunce wasn’t all that impressed with Khan’s December 15th opponent Carlos Molina (17-0, 7 KO’s). Bunce feels that Molina was picked solely due to his unbeaten record. HBO or Showtime will want Khan to fight an opponent with a good record before they agree to televise his fight. With Molia, at least it gives the appearance that Khan is fighting a good opponent, even if Molina has no power and is badly over-matched by the taller, faster and bigger punching Khan. Bunce feels that better fighters could have been chosen to fight Khan on December 15th instead of Molina.
