Image: Khan about Molina: I could have taken an easy fightBy William Mackay: It’s interesting that former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (26-3, 18 KO’s) is characterizing his December 15th fight against the light hitting lightweight Carlos Molina (17-0, 7 KO’s) as not an easy fight when the two of them meet in a fight that will be aired on Showtime television at the Sports Arena, in Los Angeles, California.

Khan said this about the Molina fight, “I could have taken an easy fight.”

I can’t believe Khan is saying this because it really doesn’t get much easier than this for him. When you get to the point where your promotional team are picking smaller fighters without power like the 5’6″ Molina from a division below Khan, that suggests that he’s being spoon fed. Calling it a tough fight is a joke because it’s not a tough fight.

You can’t blame Golden Boy for trying to protect their investment because they’ve been hoping that Khan would pan out in the United States and eventually become a pay per view star. Perhaps Khan would have had been a minor PPV fighter in the 200 K buy category if he hadn’t lost his last two fights to Lamont Peterson and Danny Garcia, but those losses really hurt Khan big time. It doesn’t matter that Khan looked exciting in both fights, he went and screwed things up by being knocked out by Garcia in the 4th round last July, and by running, shoving and holding his way to defeat against Peterson.

Molina doesn’t have any chance of winning this fight, because he’s too slow, too weak and two small. He’s just being brought in for Khan to look sensational in destroying a tiny guy. It’ll work as long as the Showtime broadcasters don’t explain the obvious by pointing out that Molina is just a sacrificial lamb being brought in for Khan to slaughter. If they build up Molina to be some great fighter, the casual boxing fans will get pumped up by Khan’s victory over Molina and see it as more than it really is.
