Image: Weeks sees Pacquiao vs. Mayweather fight happening eventuallyBy Chris Williams: Highly respected referee Tony Weeks sees a mega fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. still taking place at some point, for what it’s worth.

In an interview at the Manila Standard, Weeks said ā€œIā€™m sure things will work itself out and the fight will happen. It’s just a matter of waiting and seeing and let the people come together and get it done.ā€

That sounds good but I don’t know how good the chances are for this fight to get put together given the differences between the two fighters for what they’re asking for from the fight and due to Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum. He may say he’s interested in putting Pacquiao in with Mayweather, but then he does things that makes you believe he’s setting up obstacles to prevent the fight from taking place.

For example, Arum talking about an outdoor arena needing to be made, which is what slowed things down earlier this year when Mayweather was eager to make the fight before going to jail. Arum’s desire for an outdoor arena to be made seemed to indicate to some boxing fans that Arum wasn’t ready to put his cash cow fighter Pacquiao in with Mayweather. Then recently, Arum went ahead and scheduled Pacquiao to fight in April of next year and has already said he’s eager to see Pacquiao fight one of his own fighter Brandon Rios. That kind of kills any hope for a Mayweather vs. Pacquiao fight, because Mayweather isn’t going to fit inside that scheduled date, not when he hasn’t been spoken to about it.

I do think a fight between Pacquiao and Mayweather will take place at some point in the future but only after both fighters are totally shot and the fight has lost pretty much any interest that it once did. It’ll be like an old timer’s fight, something similar to the Bernard Hopkins vs. Roy Jones Jr. rematch two years ago. That fight would have been huge if they had made it years earlier instead of waiting so long that fans lost interest. I see the same thing happening with Mayweather and Pacquiao.
