Hearn: Kell Brook is going to be one of the biggest boxing stars

Image: Hearn: Kell Brook is going to be one of the biggest boxing starsBy Scott Gilfoid: Promoter Eddie Hearn thinks the skies the limit for his young fighter unbeaten Kell Brook (29-0, 19 KO’s) after his 3rd round TKO win over Argentinian Hector Saldivia (41-3, 32 KO’s) to earn the IBF welterweight mandatory position last Saturday night in Sheffield. The win, one of the easiest of Brook’s eight year career, seems to have planted some ideas into Hearn’s head because he’s thinking that IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander will just give his IBF title up to Brook instead of fighting him.

In addition to that, Hearn is now seeing Brook as a huge boxing star despite the fact that the best fighter he’s ever fought was Carson Jones, who arguably beat him last July. You take that fight outside of the UK and Brook would have a loss on his record in my view.

Hearn said to Sky Sports News: “This guy is going to be one of the biggest stars boxing as ever had in this country.”

I fail to see how Brook is the best fighter that the UK has ever had when he’s pretty much only popular in just one small region. How does that make Brook the best when he fights only at the Motorpoint Arena, in Sheffield?

Hearn says that he wants Brook to be back in the ring by February or March of next year either fighting Devon Alexander, Amir Khan or Ricky Hatton. I think Hearn is kidding himself if he thinks Brook is going to get a fight against Hatton or Khan next, so he should be thinking about the Alexander fight and nothing else. Khan already said on his twitter last night that Brook still needs to beat a top 50 contender despite Brook beating the #3 IBF contender Saldivia.

In other words, Khan didn’t see Saldivia as a legit #3 contender. That’s got to hurt. Here Brook beats some obscure fighter in Saldivia, who none of the other sanctioning bodies have anywhere near the top 15, and Khan isn’t recognizing the win. As such, Hearn needs to pipe down about trying to get Hatton or Khan next if he can’t make the Alexander fight, because that’s not going to happen. It’s either going to be Brook fighting Alexander next or Hearn will have to find another Saldivia type for Brook to add some more empty fluff to his inflated record.
