Berto too fast and too powerful for Robert Guerrero

With the exception of a small handful of fighters in those weight classes, Guerrero was damn near unbeatable. However, he’s now let his ambition drive him forward to the welterweight division and he’s hardly unbeatable now or even close to that.

He’s picked up the interim WBC welterweight title by beating a very flawed but powerful Selcuk Aydin last July, but that might be about the extent of what Guerrero can do at this weight unless he targets WBA paper champion Paulie Malignaggi before Ricky Hatton gets to him. But Guerrero is about to be shown why it’s not a good idea to skip weight classes to move in weight when you don’t have the power or the speed to be successful at that. Guerrero will be fighting former IBF/WBA welterweight champion Andre Berto (28-1, 22 KO’s) next month on November 24th at the Citizens Business Bank Arena, in Ontario, California.

Berto has all the advantages in this fight that you can think of. He’s faster, bigger, stronger and more experienced against guys in this weight class. Guerrero has a lot of experience. The problem is that experience has come against smaller guys with weaker power in the lower weight classes. Guerrero is now fighting a bigger guy in Berto, who has much better power and incredibly better speed than the guys that Guerrero fought in the past. It’s not good for Guerrero in this fight, and it’s too bad he wasn’t wise enough to see that he simply doesn’t match up well at all with Berto. Beating a raw fighter like Selcuk Aydin is one thing, but trying to beat a professional fighter with skills like Berto, it’s simply not going to happen.

Guerrero sees himself as being able to trouble Berto with his own power. It’s pretty sad because if you watched Guerrero’s fight against Aydin, you saw that Guerrero is little more than a slapper at welterweight and he’s not going to be able to trouble Berto with that kind of power.
