Macklin: I’d like another shot against Sergio Martinez if he beats Chavez Jr

Macklin wants to fight Martinez again if he’s able to get past WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. on Saturday night.

Macklin, who will be fighting on the undercard of Chavez Jr-Martinez, has to do his part by beating former WBA junior middleweight champion Joachim Alcine (33-2-1, 19 KO’s) in their 10 round bout.

Macklin said this as quoted by RingTV “If Martinez wins, I would love another crack at him. If Chavez wins, I would love that fight. I think Chavez and I would be a good fight. I think that I would beat him up. So Chavez, that’s the fight that I want the most, because stylistically it suits me.”

I think Macklin will get neither fighter regardless of how things go tomorrow night. He can probably KO Alcine in one or two rounds and still be ignored by the Chavez Jr-Martinez winner, because those guys got much better fight opportunities available to them than fighting a guy that was recently knocked out. That’s not even interesting. Macklin has lost his last two fights, so why would Chavez Jr. or Martinez want to fight him unless they were trying to milk their title. Believe me, neither of these guys are going to bother fighting Macklin.

My advice for Macklin is to try and fight the loser of Saturday’s fight between Martinez and Chavez Jr. He stands a much better chance of getting that fight than the winner of it. The Chavez Jr-Martinez winner has the options to fight IBF/WBA champ Daniel Geale or the WBA champion Gennady Golovkin.

HBO is interested in either one of these guys in a fight against the Chavez Jr. vs. Martinez winner. I can’t see HBO saying yes to a fight because the Chavez Jr-Martinez winner taking on a guy that has lost his last two fights in Macklin. Why would they? If I was the one calling the shots I’d say no to Macklin against the winner without even batting an eye.
