By Jim Dower: Romanian heavyweight prospect Christian Hammer (12-3, 8 KO’s) made easy work of former British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion Danny Williams (44-13, 33 KO’s) on Friday night in a 4th round TKO win to capture the vacant WBO European heavyweight title at the Sparkassen-Arena, Goettingen, Niedersachsen, Germany. Williams down twice in the fight, once in the 1st and another time in the 4th.

The fight was halted after Williams was cornered and then hammered with several hard right hands that led to referee Paul Thomas stopping the fight at 0:57 of the 4th.

Williams had been knocked down moments before from a short left hand from the 6’2″ 255 pound German-based Hammer. After Williams got back up, he was quickly driven to the corner by two hard rights from Hammer. It was there that the fight was halted with Williams still upright but looking shell shocked.

In the 1st round, Hammer knocked Williams down with a hard right to the head late in the fight.

In rounds two and three, Williams fell down after being shoved by rough-fighting Hammer.

Odd part about this fight is that Williams, now a journeyman, never really seemed to try and throw shots. He has the power to hurt a lot of guys, even this guy, but Williams just wasn’t letting his hands go for some reason. He just let Hammer do all the punching. Hammer does seem to have really good power in his right hand, so it’s not hard to understand why Williams was having problems tonight. Hammer is a lot better than the guys that Williams has been fighting lately and this probably a bad idea to put this fight together in the first place.

Williams now has lost four out of his last five fights, and it’s anyone’s guess how much longer he’ll continue on. He should have retired years ago back in 2008, but he’s continued on for some reason. It must be disappointing to him to get beaten by guys he would have likely taken care of with no problems earlier in his career.
