Warren: I’d have no worries matching Ricky Burns against any lightweight in the world

Image: Warren: I'd have no worries matching Ricky Burns against any lightweight in the worldBy Scott Gilfoid: British promoter Frank Warren likes his fighter WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns’ chances against any lightweight in the entire world after Burns knocked out the previously badly exposed Kevin Mitchell last Saturday night. I wonder if Warren is including the talented Adrien Broner in the list of fighters that he’d favor Burns again. If so, then I got some advice for Warren. Keep Burns far, far away from Broner because he’ll expose the reality of Burn’s limited talent by whipping him bad.

That just kind of goes without saying basically. It’s not as if Burns didn’t already have a chance to fight Broner last year and what did Burns do? He vacated his WBO super featherweight title and moved up in weight right when Broner was closing in on him to snatch his WBO strap. Right now, Burns is a little safe because Broner is targeting WBC lightweight champion Antonio DeMarco’s title and will be taking it off of him this November.

That move might save Burns from having to fight Broner, because right now he’s Burns’ mandatory challenger and he has to fight his mandatory next. If Broner beats DeMarco, then Burns will be off the hook and won’t have to face Broner and take a likely beating. He’ll still have huge problems because top contenders Sharif Bogere and Jose Gonzalez are than good enough to beat Burns in my estimation, and I’ve seen a lot of those guys. They’re a lot better than Burns.

Warren said to thesun.co.uk “That blockbuster [Scott Harrison vs. Burns], plus unification’s against world champions like Miguel Vazquez could happen next year. I’d have no worries matching Burns against any lightweight in the world.”

I wonder why Warren didn’t mention a unification against DeMarco? He’s considered a better fighter than Vazquez. Why pick the easy guy for Burns? Hasn’t he fought enough easy guys already? I don’t see Burns EVER fighting Broner, and watch and see how I’m right about this. That’s a fight that I can’t ever see happening even though Broner really wants it.

I don’t see a fight between Burns and Harrison being any kind of blockbuster. That just looks like a fight between a young guy and an old rusty ex-champion who hasn’t fought anyone with a pulse in years. Shouldn’t Harrison have to actually beat a live body to get a world title shot? How can the WBO let a fight like that happen if Harrison isn’t even ranked in the top 15?
